Visiting Scholar Program<br />
From <strong>2009</strong>, <strong>BIDS</strong> has started the Visiting Scholar<br />
Program (VSP) which is designed to support<br />
institutional capacity building program of the<br />
Institute through creating opportunities to<br />
professionals/senior researchers from home<br />
and abroad to undertake collaborative work/<br />
joint research with <strong>BIDS</strong> researchers in mutually<br />
agreed areas. This Program is especially suitable<br />
for Bangladeshi researchers, academicians, and<br />
scholars living and working (temporarily or<br />
permanently) abroad. Non-Bangladeshi scholars<br />
or scholars living in Bangladesh are also covered<br />
under the Program.<br />
Dr. Naoko Shinkai, Associate Professor, Graduate<br />
School of International Development, Nagoya<br />
University, Japan visited <strong>BIDS</strong> under the Visiting<br />
Scholar Program in October <strong>2009</strong>.<br />
Dr. Rizwanul Islam, former Director of the<br />
Employment and Policy Planning Unit of ILO,<br />
Geneva joined <strong>BIDS</strong> as a Visiting Research Scholar<br />
during November <strong>2009</strong> to February <strong>2010</strong> and<br />
worked on addressing the challenge of jobless<br />
growth in developing countries in collaboration<br />
with <strong>BIDS</strong> researchers. His research has been<br />
published under <strong>BIDS</strong> Occasional Paper Series<br />
under the title, ‘The Challenge of Jobless Growth<br />
in Developing Countries: An Analysis with Cross-<br />
Country Data’ in October <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
Professor Fahad Khalil of the Department of<br />
Economics, University of Washington, Seattle, USA<br />
visited <strong>BIDS</strong> as a Visiting Research Scholar during<br />
August-September <strong>2010</strong> and worked with <strong>BIDS</strong><br />
researchers on areas of mutual interest.<br />
Dr. Niaz Asadullah of the Department of Economics,<br />
University of Reading, UK and a Research Fellow<br />
at IZA, Bonn was in <strong>BIDS</strong> as a Visiting Research<br />
Scholar during August-September <strong>2010</strong> to pursue<br />
research of mutual interest.<br />
Internship/Volunteer Program<br />
The Internship/Volunteer Program (IVP) of <strong>BIDS</strong><br />
has been designed in <strong>2009</strong> in order to provide<br />
opportunities for fresh graduates of related<br />
disciplines to learn through active participation<br />
in ongoing research and other activities of<br />
<strong>BIDS</strong>. Bangladeshi graduates from recognized<br />
educational institutions completing a minimum<br />
of four year graduation course in relevant fields<br />
are considered for the Program. Non-Bangladeshi<br />
graduates are also covered under Internship/<br />
Volunteer Program.<br />
Participation of <strong>BIDS</strong> Professionals in National<br />
and International Events<br />
The participation in various national and<br />
international events is an important component of<br />
capacity building program of <strong>BIDS</strong> professionals.<br />
During the period, <strong>BIDS</strong> researchers widely<br />
participated in such events as Session Chairs,<br />
Panelists, Designated Discussants, Keynote<br />
Speakers as well as participants. Besides, a number<br />
of mid-level and junior researchers participated<br />
in various training programs organized by<br />
national and international organizations. The<br />
<strong>BIDS</strong> professionals also participate in seminars,<br />
workshops, conferences, and similar events in<br />
Bangladesh and outside Bangladesh on a regular<br />
basis. The details of such participation are given in<br />
Annex 5.<br />
