in May 1990. He did his postdoctoral studies at<br />
Harvard University during 1994-95. He worked as a<br />
consultant in organizations such as UNDP, UNCHR,<br />
USAID, World Bank, ADB, ILO, UNICEF, JBIC and<br />
ICIMOD. The areas of his current research interest<br />
cover employment generation and labor welfare,<br />
assessment of current and future skill demand,<br />
social economics, human values, human rights and<br />
dignity, industrial economics, and nutrition and<br />
anthropometry. He has completed a large number<br />
of research works published in reputed national<br />
and international journals and books. He worked<br />
as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong> till <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
Rita Afsar<br />
Senior Research Fellow<br />
Dr. Rita Afsar completed her Ph.D. in Population<br />
Studies from University of Adelaide in 1995.<br />
She received her M.A. from the University of the<br />
Philippines, Diliman and an M.A. in Sociology<br />
from Delhi University in 1985, M.A. in Social Work<br />
in 1978, and she completed her B.A. in Political<br />
Science in 1976 from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi<br />
University. Her principal areas of research include<br />
population studies with particular reference to<br />
policy oriented research in international and<br />
rural-urban migration, urbanization, globalization<br />
and regional development, immigration and<br />
brain-gain, social capital, gender analysis,<br />
changes in women’s employment, roles and<br />
status, empowerment and related issues, poverty,<br />
labor (including decent work) and governance<br />
issues, RMG sector and institutional analysis in<br />
development discourse. Currently, she is working<br />
as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />
Kazi Ali Toufique<br />
Senior Research Fellow<br />
Dr. Kazi Ali Toufique did his B.S.S. and M.S.S. in<br />
Economics in 1982 and 1983, respectively from<br />
Dhaka University. He obtained an M.A. from<br />
Fordham University in 1987, M.Phil. in 1990,<br />
and Ph.D. in 1996, both from the University of<br />
Cambridge. He joined <strong>BIDS</strong> in 1989 as a Research<br />
Associate. His main areas of research interest<br />
are institutional economics, livelihoods analysis,<br />
natural resource management, environment and<br />
agricultural economics. He has contributed to<br />
many seminars and conferences both at home<br />
and abroad and has also published in reputed<br />
international journals. He has been working as a<br />
Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />
Bimal Kumar Saha<br />
Senior Research Fellow<br />
Dr. Bimal Kumar Saha obtained an M.A. in<br />
Economics from Dhaka University in 1974,<br />
an M. Phil. from the Institute of Bangladesh<br />
Studies, Rajshahi University in 1979 and a Ph.D.<br />
in Economics from the University of Calcutta in<br />
1995. He has worked extensively in the fields of<br />
agrarian structure, technological change, land<br />
reform and development. He has a number of<br />
publications, including a book on comparative<br />
agrarian development in Bangladesh and West<br />
Bengal. His current research interests include<br />
political economy of agrarian questions, poverty<br />
condition of agricultural laborers and tenants, land<br />
acquisition and peasant movement. Currently, he<br />
is working as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />
Pratima Paul-Majumder<br />
Senior Research Fellow<br />
Dr. Pratima Paul-Majumder completed her Ph.D.<br />
from Central School of Planning and Statistics,<br />
Warsaw in 1978. She received her B.A. (Honours<br />
in Economics) from Chittagong University in 1968<br />
and M.A. in Economics from Dhaka University<br />
in 1970 and Dip-in-Planning, Central School of<br />
Planning and Statistics, Warsaw 1973. She served as<br />
a consultant to a number of projects conducted by<br />
various national and international organizations.<br />
Her research interests involve a wide range of<br />
subjects from sericulture industry to economics<br />
of slums and squatter settlements to garment and<br />
tea industries and gender issues. Currently she is<br />
working as a Senior Research Fellow in <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />
