The street battles were concentrated in Mogadishu's Hodan and Bondhere districts after Al<br />

Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabaab insurgents attacked positions controlled by Somali government<br />

forces and their African Union (AMISOM) allies.<br />

Local sources reported that at least 6 civilians were among the dead and there were some 25<br />

wounded persons receiving emergency treatment at Mogadishu's hospitals.<br />

Jan 26 - One day after AMISOM soldiers shot and wounded four civilians, who rushed to help a<br />

teenager hit accidentally by a vehicle, African Union peacekeepers in <strong>Somalia</strong> on Wednesday<br />

said they had taken those soldiers committed the shooting into custody.<br />

Speaking to local media; AMISOM Deputy Force Commander Maj. Gen. Cyprien Hakiza<br />

apologized for the civilian casualties.<br />

―We are very sorry for civilian casualties that committed by soldiers of AMISOM forces against<br />

civilians in the street between KM4 junction and Mogadishu international airport‖ Cyprien<br />

said. ―We are very sorry for civilian casualties that committed by soldiers of AMISOM forces<br />

against civilians in the street between KM4 junction and Mogadishu international airport."<br />

AMISOM will work with Somali authorities to investigate the shooting; however local civilians are<br />

already using the incident to protest against African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu. It is the<br />

second such alleged incident by AU troops in only four months.<br />

10 Killed in Central Region in Battles between Shabaab and Ahlu Sunna<br />

Jan 25 - At least 10 people mostly fighters were killed in central <strong>Somalia</strong> during Tuesday battles<br />

between Al Shabaab insurgents and the pro-government Ahlu Sunna militia, Radio Garowe<br />

reports. Local reports said the fighting took place in three villages south of Guri El, a small trading<br />

town in Galgadud region of central <strong>Somalia</strong>.<br />

Witnesses reported the violence in War-dhuumo-leh, Dhagah-yale and El Got villages, all located<br />

in Galgadud region. Galgadud has been the epicenter of violence between Al Shabaab's<br />

northbound violent expansion and Ethiopian-backed Ahlu Sunna Wal Jam'ea militias, which<br />

control the region's key towns including the provincial capital, Dhusamareb.<br />

Jan 25 - At least 4 civilian people have been wounded in Mogadishu after African Union<br />

peacekeepers fired civilian bus, witnesses said on Tuesday. Local residents told Shabelle Media<br />

Network that the civilian bus was traveling the main road between KM4 junction and Mogadishu<br />

international airport when it came under fire from AMISOM forces based in building there.<br />

Before the shooting, a crowd of people had rushed to help a young boy hit accidentally by a<br />

running vehicle and that caused AMISOM forces to suspect the crowd of the people and open<br />

fire. Locals said the injured people were rushed to a hospital in the capital for treatment. The<br />

officials of African Union peacekeepers in <strong>Somalia</strong> have not released any comments about the<br />

civilian casualties so far.<br />
