June 30: Geneva (ICRC) – Keysaney Hospital in northern Mogadishu was hit by a shell
yesterday afternoon, killing one patient and wounding another. The shell struck the triage
building, where war-wounded patients were waiting for medical emergency care, destroying the
roof, producing cracks in the wall and leaving the hospital more exposed than ever. The hospital
was clearly marked with the red crescent emblem.
"We are deeply concerned about the patients and staff at Keysaney. The situation is more than
desperate when people cannot even feel safe in a hospital. Medical personnel and facilities are
scarce in Somalia," said Dr Ahmed Mohamed Hassan, president of the Somali Red Crescent
Society. "The services provided by Keysaney are absolutely vital."
Although nothing suggests that the hospital was deliberately targeted, the International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Somali Red Crescent remind all parties to the
conflict of their obligation to spare medical staff and hospitals, clinics and similar facilities. Attacks
may be directed only against persons taking a direct part in hostilities and against military
objectives, and warring parties must spare the civilian population and civilian objects at all times.
Keysaney is one of two ICRC-supported surgical referral hospitals in Mogadishu. It is managed
by the Somali Red Crescent and accepts all patients, regardless of their clan and religious or
political background. The ICRC provides the hospital with surgical equipment, medicines and
training for doctors and nurses. Since the beginning of the year nearly 1400 war patients have
been treated at the hospital, including over 300 women and around 200 children.
Reuters-Feb 1-Islamist insurgents fired mortar bombs at the presidential palace in the Somali
capital overnight, prompting return fire by troops that killed at least six people, medical officials
and residents said on Monday.
Violence has killed at least 21,000 people in the failed Horn of Africa nation since the start of
2007 and driven another 1.5 million from their homes, helping trigger one of the world's worst
humanitarian emergencies. Rebels from the hardline al Shabaab group, which Washington says
is al Qaeda's proxy in Somalia, routinely fire at the hilltop Villa Somali palace from other parts of
Mogadishu. Troops at the palace often launch shells back.
Residents and medical officials said several bombs struck the city's northern Suqa Holaha, or
livestock market, district. "We have collected six dead bodies and 50 wounded people from
various locations around that area," Ali Musa, coordinator of Mogadishu's over-stretched
ambulance service, told Reuters.
Somalia has not had an effective central government for nearly two decades, leading to the rise
More than 30 people were wounded in the battles, said Ali Muse, the head of the ambulance
service in Mogadishu. Residents cowered in their homes, unable to venture out as the warring
sides fought with artillery, mortars and machine guns.
Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage, a spokesman for the insurgent al-Shabab group, said the attacks were
aimed at pre-empting an anticipated offensive against the Islamic militia, which controls much of
southern regions, most of the capital and some central regions.
Meanwhile, Somalia's humanitarian crisis has gotten worse. The number of Somalis who need
humanitarian aid has swelled from 1.8 million in January 2008 to 3.6 million today, and the lack of
security, particularly in southern Somalia, has forced many aid agencies to suspend operations.
Radio Galkayo-Jan 27-Seven people have been killed and dozens others wounded following
indiscriminate shelling between AU peacekeepers and insurgents in Mogadishu.
Among those killed were passengers in a bus hit by stray mortar near Jaale Siyad Military
academy in Mogadishu. The shelling started after insurgents fired several mortars at the
presidential palace in Mogadishu, prompting AU peacekeepers stationed there to respond with
heavy artillery which hit Daynile, Hodan, Wardhiigley and Yaqshid districts. The injured are said
to be in serious conditions and are being treated in Mogadishu hospitals.
Killing of innocent civilians has increased in the Somali capital as rival political groups fire
artillery guns without considering women and children in the city. Last night's shelling comes at
a time when the Somali government prepares offensives against insurgents in the country.
different neighbourhoods of Mogadishu. According to the local Shabelle radio, numerous mortar
shells hit civilian homes in the northern sector of the capital, though there was no fighting
between the rival sides and the situation in the city appeared calm. The blasts caught residents
by surprise, killing various people on the streets and in their homes. One mortar destroyed an
entire apartment building, killing 8 and wounding 7, all taken to the Keysaney and Medina
hospitals.
"Mortar shells landed at the vegetable section of Bakara market, killing 5 civilians and injuring
several others," said a woman who lives near Bakara in Hodan neighbourhood. The shelling
restarted again on Monday morning in Yaqshid and Wardhigley, claiming the lives of at least five
civilians including three passengers of BL vehicle.
"A passenger vehicle passing near Afarta Jardino intersection came under Mortar attack. Three
passengers were killed and 9 others injured," said an eyewitness. No group has claimed
responsibility for the latest flare-ups, which come amid reports of government offensives against
the powerful insurgents in Mogadishu
Fighting in Somalia has killed at least 138 people and displaced 63,000 others in the last
two weeks.
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23795597-somali-militants-kill-138-in-two-weekbattle.do
Militants from Islamic groups Hizbul Islam and al Shabaab have fought government-allied Ahlu
Sunna Waljamaca over three towns in the centre of the east African country.
―At least 138 people died and 344 others were injured,‖ Ali Yasin Gedi, of Elman human rights
group, said today. ―It has also displaced 63,000 people from Galgadud and Hiiraan regions.‖
Hizbul Islam and its rival al Shabaab — which the US says is linked with al Qaeda — want to
impose strict sharia law in Somalia, which has had no functional government since 1991. Ahlu
Sunna, which is aligned to president Sheikh Shari Ahmed's weak UN-backed administration,
advocates a more moderate version of Islam.
Since the start of 2007, violence has killed at least 19,000 Somalis and displaced 1.5 million
people. The UN said this week that 3,000 Somalis had arrived in Ethiopian refugee camps, and
that 4,175 had arrived in Kenya this month.
Reuters-Jan 13-Seven children were among ten people killed in shelling by Somali government
forces in Mogadishu Wednesday as the troops backed by African Union peacekeepers fired
mortars into districts held by Islamist insurgents.
The seven children were struck by shells while playing football in the capital's southern
Wardhigley neighbourhood, witnesses and medical officials said.
"I saw the bodies of seven children killed after a mortar shell struck a playground near... a
primary school," said Mohamed Abdulle, a witness. Two other civilians died of their wounds in the
city's Medina hospital where 13 people were taken for treatment, the hospital's director Mohamed
Yusuf Hasan told AFP, while another civilian was killed by a stray bullet.
The shelling was in retaliation for an attack by the hardline Islamists who had fired shells at the
bases of the AU and government forces, said Mohamed Ali, a Somali government security
official.
Garowe Online-Jan 10-At least 3 people have been killed and 8 others injured after fighting
between Al-Shabaab militants and Somali government forces rocked a district in the restive
capital at Abdulaziz district in north Mogadishu,
An Al-Shabab official claimed that his group has repelled onslaught on their positions in Abdiaziz
district in north Mogadishu, blaming the government forces backed by African Union troops.
"The government troops attacked us and we defend our bases," said Sheikh Hussein Ali Fidow,
who was addressing the local media after the fight. Somali government military spokesman Col.
Ibrahim Kalmoy confirmed the fighting but denied Al-Shabaab claims of receiving backings from
AU troops.
The casualty figures from the two sides were not clear and AMISOM officials have not
commented about the fighting. Last week, clashes between the government forces backed by
AMISOM troops and Islamist rebels caused the death of more than 30 people including women
and children. The clashes also forced many civilians, who returned to their homes last months, to
flee another time to the outskirts of Mogadishu where they don‘t have shelter, food and water.
