Feb 20 - As many as 20 US military strikes in <strong>Somalia</strong> since 2007 have killed up to 162 people,<br />

new research by the Bureau indicates. Of those killed, between 11 and 59 people are reported to<br />

be civilians.US military intervention in war-torn <strong>Somalia</strong> is shown to be on a far lower scale than<br />

in Yemen or Pakistan. However, US attacks escalated sharply against al Shabaab targets in<br />

2011.<br />

The Bureau has carried out a detailed examination of reports of western military activity in<br />

<strong>Somalia</strong> spanning over more than a decade. These are drawn from credible media, from<br />

academic research, from US and UK military and diplomatic records and from other reputable<br />

sources.<br />

Feb 20 – At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured when clashes sparked late Sunday night<br />

and continued on till the next morning, Radio Garowe reports. The fighting began in the district of<br />

Karaan near the street which links Mogadishu and Afgoye. The fighting took the lives of 4 civilians<br />

and injured more than 20, after artillery had missed the target and hit civilian homes.<br />

People in the area of the Karaan were paralyzed with fear after heavy artillery was being fired<br />

back and forth one resident of the district Mohamed Ismail told Garowe Online, ―Last night our<br />

neighborhood was shelled many times, two people in my family were killed.‖ Unconfirmed reports<br />

say that AMISOM and TFG troops fired artillery that had killed some civilians in Sunday night‘s<br />

clashes.<br />

February 14 - At least one person was confirmed killed and three others injured Tuesday in<br />

fighting between pro-Somali government soldiers backed by AU peacekeepers known as<br />

AMISOM and the Al-Qaeda linked Al-shabab militants, a military official says.All casualties in the<br />

war were on civilians who caught crossfire and landed their houses by mortar shells in<br />

Mogadishu's Dharkenlay district and 13-Km area near the capital, Mogadishu. The battle<br />

intensified in the early hours on Tuesday morning after AMISOM forces moved towards Alshabab<br />

held Elasha-Biyaha, 10 miles away from the capital.<br />

February 9 th - At least 15 people were killed and over 30 injured after Al Shabaab insurgents<br />

attacked a base that was holding troops in Luuq, Radio Garowe reports. The Al Shabaab<br />

insurgents‘ surprise attacked a compound in Luuq located in southern <strong>Somalia</strong> Saturday evening,<br />

the compound was holding troops from <strong>Somalia</strong>, Ethiopia and Kenya.<br />
