size of a survey is small. <strong>SPSS</strong> will ignore the missing values (indicated <strong>by</strong><br />

empty cells or <strong>by</strong> a specific code; see Data Entry in Chapter 1), unless you<br />

decide to replace them. Suppose some patients decide not to answer a question<br />

regarding their monthly attendance at an exercise programme of a cardiac<br />

rehabilitation centre. Find the variable attend <strong>and</strong> move it into the New<br />

Variable(s) box. <strong>SPSS</strong> <strong>by</strong> default will use the Series mean method to calculate<br />

the missing values <strong>and</strong> will create a new variable with no missing values called<br />

attend_1. If you do not like the new name you can change it <strong>by</strong> clicking on<br />

Change. When you finish, click OK <strong>and</strong> a new column will appear in the data<br />

file called attend_1. This column has all the monthly attendance scores without<br />

any missing values.<br />

The Series mean method replaces the missing values with the mean score of<br />

the particular variable (i.e., attend). This is the most common method of
