ACCREDITATION: Accreditation is the establishment of the status, legitimacy or appropriateness<br />

of an <strong>in</strong>stitution, program or module of study.<br />

ACCREDITATION BODY: An accreditation body is an organisation delegated to make decisions,<br />

on behalf of the higher education sector, about the status, legitimacy or appropriateness of<br />

an <strong>in</strong>stitution, or program.<br />

ACCREDITATION MILL: Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learn<strong>in</strong>g (APEL): APEL is the <strong>for</strong>mal<br />

acknowledgement (based on professional assessment) of learn<strong>in</strong>g acquired from previous<br />

experience, usually from experience unrelated to an academic context.<br />

Accreditation of Prior Learn<strong>in</strong>g (APL): Formal acknowledgement (based on professional assessment),<br />

by way of grant<strong>in</strong>g credit, of students’ previous learn<strong>in</strong>g: credit is given towards a<br />

program of study or towards professional body accreditation.<br />

ACCREDITATION DURATION: Accreditation decisions are usually limited to a fixed and stated<br />

period of time, after which the <strong>in</strong>stitution or program is required to engage with a more or<br />

less rigorous re-accreditation process.<br />

ACCREDITATION PORTFOLIO: An accreditation portfolio is the accumulated evidence germane<br />

to establish<strong>in</strong>g accredited status.<br />

ACCREDITATION STATUS: Accreditation status is the embodiment of the decision made by the<br />

accreditation body.<br />

ACCREDITATION SURVEY: Accreditation survey is a term ma<strong>in</strong>ly applicable <strong>in</strong> the US context<br />

and refers to a process of check<strong>in</strong>g compliance.<br />

ACCREDITORS: Accreditors are agencies that provide recognition to <strong>in</strong>stitutions as part of an<br />

accreditation process (see also accreditation body).<br />

ACTION: Action is a term used <strong>in</strong> the United States to imply a judgment or decision follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an *Accreditation (see also adverse action).<br />

AGENCY: Agency is, <strong>in</strong> the context of quality <strong>in</strong> higher education, shorthand <strong>for</strong> any organisation<br />

that undertakes any k<strong>in</strong>d of monitor<strong>in</strong>g, evaluation or review of the quality of higher<br />

education.<br />

AIM: An aim is an overall specification of the <strong>in</strong>tention or purpose of a program of study or<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional mission or policy.<br />

ALUMNUS: An alumnus (plural alumni) is a graduate of an <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

APPROVAL: Approval is an overarch<strong>in</strong>g term to cover various <strong>for</strong>ms of academic recognition<br />

of a program or <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

Appraisal of student learn<strong>in</strong>g: Appraisal of student learn<strong>in</strong>g is the process of provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>mative<br />

and summative feedback to students on the development of their learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ARTICULATION AGREEMENT: See credit transfer<br />

ASSESSMENT: A general term that embraces all methods used to judge the per<strong>for</strong>mance of an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual, group or organisation.<br />

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING: Assessment of student learn<strong>in</strong>g is the process of evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the extent to which participants <strong>in</strong> education have developed their knowledge, under-<br />
