ONE-LEVEL DEGREE STRUCTURE: One-level degree structure is where a s<strong>in</strong>gle program of<br />
study results <strong>in</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>al (masters-level) award.<br />
OUTCOMES: Outcome is:<br />
1. shorthand <strong>for</strong> the product or endeavours of a higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution (or sector), <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
student learn<strong>in</strong>g and skills development, research outputs and contributions to the wider<br />
society locally or <strong>in</strong>ternationally (<strong>in</strong>stitutional outcomes).<br />
2. shorthand <strong>for</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g outcome (discussed elsewhere).<br />
OUTCOMES-BASED APPROACH: An outcomes-based approach to learn<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g specifies<br />
<strong>in</strong> advance what the student should be able to do at the culm<strong>in</strong>ation of a program of<br />
study.<br />
OUTPUTS: <strong>The</strong> term outputs refers to the products of higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions: <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
graduates, research outcomes, community/bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities and the social critical function of<br />
academia.<br />
OVERSIGHT: Oversight, <strong>in</strong> the quality context, refers to the process of keep<strong>in</strong>g a quality process<br />
or <strong>in</strong>itiative under observation, such that a person or organisation has a watch<strong>in</strong>g brief<br />
on developments.<br />
P<br />
PEER: Peer, <strong>in</strong> the context of quality <strong>in</strong> higher education, is a person who understands the context<br />
<strong>in</strong> which a quality review is be<strong>in</strong>g undertaken and is able to contribute to the process.<br />
PEER REVIEW: Peer review is the process of evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the provision, work process, or output of<br />
an <strong>in</strong>dividual or collective who is operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the same milieu as the reviewer(s).<br />
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: Per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>in</strong>dicators are data, usually quantitative <strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong>m,<br />
that provide a measure of some aspect of an <strong>in</strong>dividual’s or organisation’s per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st which changes <strong>in</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance or the per<strong>for</strong>mance of others can be compared.<br />
PERFORMANCE AUDIT: Per<strong>for</strong>mance audit is a check on the competence of someone to undertake<br />
a task.<br />
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING (PDP): Personal development plann<strong>in</strong>g is a structured<br />
and supported process to assist students <strong>in</strong> arrang<strong>in</strong>g their own personal educational and<br />
career progression.<br />
PHD (DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY): See doctoral degree<br />
POLYTECHNIC: A polytechnic is a non-university higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution usually focus<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
vocational education.<br />
POSTGRADUATE: A postgraduate is someone who is undertak<strong>in</strong>g study at post-first degree<br />
level.<br />
PRELIMINARY STUDY: A prelim<strong>in</strong>ary study is an <strong>in</strong>itial exploration of issues related to a proposed<br />
quality review.<br />
PRIMARY DEGREE: A primary degree is the first-level, higher education qualification (often<br />
synonymous with a bachelor’s degree).<br />
PRIOR LEARNING: Prior learn<strong>in</strong>g is previous learn<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal and <strong>for</strong>mal learn<strong>in</strong>g situations.<br />
PROCESS: Process, <strong>in</strong> the context of quality, is the set of activities, structures and guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />
