FRANCHISE PROGRAMS: Franchise programs are study units of one higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />
adopted by and taught at another <strong>in</strong>stitution, although the students <strong>for</strong>mally obta<strong>in</strong> their<br />
qualification from the orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />
FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT (FTE): Full-time equivalent is the proportion of a nom<strong>in</strong>al full-time student<br />
<strong>in</strong> higher education that a non-full-time student is judged to constitute.<br />
FURTHER EDUCATION: Further education is post-compulsory education at pre-degree level,<br />
which may <strong>in</strong>clude (the opportunity to take) qualifications also available at the level of compulsory<br />
school<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

GRADING: Grad<strong>in</strong>g is the process of scor<strong>in</strong>g or rank<strong>in</strong>g student academic work as part of<br />

GRADUATE: A graduate is someone who has successfully completed a higher education program<br />
at least at bachelor degree level.<br />

IMPACT: Impact <strong>in</strong> the context of quality <strong>in</strong> higher education refers to the consequences that<br />
the establishment of quality processes (both <strong>in</strong>ternal and external) has on the culture, policy,<br />
organisational framework, documentation, <strong>in</strong>frastructure, learn<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g practices, assessment/grad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of students, learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes, student experience, student support, resources,<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g and research environment, research outcomes and community <strong>in</strong>volovement<br />
of an <strong>in</strong>stitution or department.<br />
IMPROVEMENT: Improvement is the process of enhanc<strong>in</strong>g, upgrad<strong>in</strong>g or enrich<strong>in</strong>g the quality<br />
of provision or standard of outcomes.<br />
INFORMAL LEARNING: In<strong>for</strong>mal learn<strong>in</strong>g is:<br />
1. learn<strong>in</strong>g that derives from activities external to a structured learn<strong>in</strong>g context.<br />
2. unstructured learn<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> a structured learn<strong>in</strong>g environment.<br />
INSPECTION: Inspection is the direct, <strong>in</strong>dependent observation and evaluation of activities and<br />
resources by a tra<strong>in</strong>ed professional.<br />
INSTITUTION: Institution is shorthand <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution of higher education, which is an educational<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitution that has students graduat<strong>in</strong>g at bachelor degree level or above.<br />
INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION: Institutional accreditation provides a licence <strong>for</strong> a university<br />
or college to operate.<br />
