MANAGEMENT AUDIT: Management audit, <strong>in</strong> higher education, is a process <strong>for</strong> check<strong>in</strong>g that<br />
management structures and abilities are appropriate <strong>for</strong> assur<strong>in</strong>g quality, <strong>in</strong>tegrity or standards<br />
of provision and outcomes.<br />
MASTER’S DEGREE: Master’s degree is an award higher than a bachelor’s degree.<br />
MOBILITY: Mobility is shorthand <strong>for</strong> students and academics study<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> other<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions, whether <strong>in</strong> the same country or abroad.<br />
MODE: Mode of study refers to whether the program is taken on a part-time or full-time basis,<br />
or through some <strong>for</strong>m of work-l<strong>in</strong>ked learn<strong>in</strong>g and may <strong>in</strong>clude whether taken on-campus or<br />
through distance education.<br />
MODULE: A module is a <strong>for</strong>mal learn<strong>in</strong>g experience encapsulated <strong>in</strong>to a unit of study, usually<br />
l<strong>in</strong>ked to other modules to create a program of study.<br />
MODULE SPECIFICATION: Module specification is statement of the aims, objectives/learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
outcomes, content, learn<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g processes, mode of assessment of students and<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g resources applicable to a unit of study.<br />
MONITORING: Monitor<strong>in</strong>g has two mean<strong>in</strong>gs:<br />
1. the specific process of keep<strong>in</strong>g quality activities under review;<br />
2. a generic term cover<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>for</strong>ms of <strong>in</strong>ternal and external quality assurance and improvement<br />
processes <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g audit, assessment, accreditation and external exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
MUTUAL RECOGNITION: Agreement between two organisations to recognise each other’s processes<br />
or programs.<br />

NON-FORMAL LEARNING: See <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS: Non-traditional students are those entrants to higher education<br />
who have population characteristics not normally associated with entrants to higher education,<br />
that is, they come from social classes, ethnic groups or age groups that are underrepresented.<br />
NORM-REFERENCED ASSESSMENT: Norm-referenced assessment is the process of evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(and grad<strong>in</strong>g) the learn<strong>in</strong>g of students by judg<strong>in</strong>g (and rank<strong>in</strong>g) them aga<strong>in</strong>st the per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />
of their peers.<br />

OBJECTIVE: An objective is:<br />
(a) a specific statement about what students are expected to learn or to be able to do as a<br />
result of study<strong>in</strong>g a program: more specifically this is a learn<strong>in</strong>g objective;<br />
(b) a measurable operationalisation of a policy, strategy or mission: this is an implementation<br />
objective.<br />
OFF-SHORE PROVISION: Off-shore provision is the export of higher education programs from<br />
one country to another.<br />
