SANDWICH: A sandwich program is one that has a significant period of work experience built<br />

<strong>in</strong>to it such that the program is extended beyond the normal length of similar programs without<br />

the sandwich element.<br />

SELF-ASSESSMENT: Self-assessment is the process of critically review<strong>in</strong>g the quality of ones’<br />

own per<strong>for</strong>mance and provision.<br />

SEMESTER: A semester is a division of the academic year; usually two semesters <strong>in</strong> a year.<br />

SEMINAR: A sem<strong>in</strong>ar is, ideally, a small-group teach<strong>in</strong>g situation <strong>in</strong> which a subject is discussed,<br />

<strong>in</strong> depth, by the participants.<br />

SITE VISIT: A site visit is when an external evaluation team goes to an <strong>in</strong>stitution to evaluate<br />

verbal, written and visual evidence.<br />

SOPHISTER: Sophister refers to undergraduates on their penultimate (junior) or f<strong>in</strong>al (senior)<br />

year of study.<br />

SPECIALIZED ACCREDITATION: Specialized accreditation refers to any accreditation process<br />

that relates to specific discipl<strong>in</strong>e areas.<br />

STAKEHOLDER: A stakeholder is a person (or group) that has an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the activities of an<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitution or organisation.<br />

SUB-INSTITUTIONAL AUDIT: See external sub-<strong>in</strong>stitutional audit; <strong>in</strong>ternal sub-<strong>in</strong>stitutional audit<br />

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: Summative assessment is the process of evaluat<strong>in</strong>g (and grad<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

the learn<strong>in</strong>g of students at a po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> time.<br />

SUBSTANTIAL EQUIVALENCY: Substantial equivalency is a term used <strong>in</strong> the US to <strong>in</strong>dicate that<br />

an overseas program is essentially the same as a US program of study.<br />

TECHNIKON: A technikon is a non-university higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution, <strong>in</strong> South Africa, focus<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on vocational education.<br />

TERTIARY EDUCATION: Tertiary education is <strong>for</strong>mal, non-compulsory, education that follows<br />

secondary education.<br />

THEMATIC EVALUATION: A thematic evaluation is a review of a particular aspect of quality<br />

or standards focus<strong>in</strong>g on an experience, practice or resource that cuts across programs or<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

THESIS: <strong>The</strong>sis is:<br />

1. short hand <strong>for</strong> doctoral thesis; the outcome of a student research at doctoral level.<br />

2. an argument propos<strong>in</strong>g and develop<strong>in</strong>g a theory about a substantive or conceptual issue.<br />

3. an <strong>in</strong>tellectual proposition.<br />

TOTAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE: Total student experience refers to all aspects of the engagement<br />

of students with higher education.<br />

TRANSCRIPT: A transcript is a pr<strong>in</strong>ted or electronic record of student achievement while <strong>in</strong><br />

higher education.<br />

TRANSFORMATION: Trans<strong>for</strong>mation is the process of chang<strong>in</strong>g from one qualitative state to<br />
