2000-01 season review
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
• The Sharks advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a franchise-record fourth
consecutive season and became just the fifth franchise in NHL history to improve
its point total for the fifth consecutive season, setting franchise records for wins
(40) and points (95).
• The Sharks finished with the sixth-best road record in the NHL (fourth-best in the
Western Conference) and set a franchise record with a 10-game unbeaten streak
on the road.
• G Evgeni Nabokov received the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of
the Year. “Nabby” set new franchise records for wins (32), goals-against average
(2.19) and shutouts (six) en route to being named the “Sharks Player of the Year”
and the PlayStation “Sharks Rookie of the Year.” He was named to the NHL’s 2001
World All-Star Team, NHL Rookie of the Month for November and December and
“Sharks Player of the Month” for October and December. He’s also the first NHL
goaltender to reach 20 victories on the season.
• C Vincent Damphousse became the 58th NHL player to score 1,000 points when
he assists on LW Marco Sturm’s goal on Oct. 14 vs. Boston.
• D Gary Suter became the 153rd NHL player to appear in 1,000 games on Oct. 25
at Columbus. He also scored San Jose’s first goal in a 3-1 win.
MAJOR TRANSACTIONS
• Acquired D Jeff Norton from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for D Bobby
Dollas and G Johan Hedberg, March 12, 2001.
• Acquired LW Bill Lindsay from the Calgary Flames in exchange for an eighth
round pick (233rd overall, previously acquired from Minnesota) in the 2001 NHL
Entry Draft, March 6, 2001.
• Acquired RW Teemu Selanne from Anaheim in exchange for LW Jeff Friesen, G
Steve Shields and a second round selection (36th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry
Draft, March 3, 2001.
• Signed free agent D Bobby Dollas, Nov. 4, 2000.
• Signed LW/C Scott Thornton as a free agent, July 1, 2000.
