THE FIRST GOAL
The 2001-02 season was a memorable one for Evgeni Nabokov in many ways. But one feat will stand out
forever.
On March 10, 2002, “Nabby” became the first goaltender in Sharks history and the seventh in NHL history
to score a goal in a regular season game. Nabokov’s goal came on an empty net at 19:12 of the third period
in San Jose’s 7-4 win in Vancouver.
Two more facts add to the significance of Nabokov’s goal. It was the first ever scored by a European-born
goaltender and the first scored by a goaltender on the power play.
