Adult Education<br />

An individual must be sixteen years old or older to enroll in<br />

Adult Education. Admission to <strong>the</strong> program will be ei<strong>the</strong>r GED®<br />

preparation or basic skills upgrading. All applicants to <strong>the</strong> program<br />

are assessed with <strong>the</strong> Test <strong>of</strong> Adult Basic Education (TABE) prior<br />

to program entry. There is no charge for classes or assessments.<br />

Books are available for student use while in class. Classes are<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered during <strong>the</strong> day and evening.<br />

Classes <strong>of</strong>fered through <strong>the</strong> Adult Education Division include <strong>the</strong><br />

following:<br />

Preparation classes for <strong>the</strong> GED exam<br />

• GED Test Preparation<br />

• GED online<br />

• Computer Skills<br />

• English-As-A-Second-Language<br />

• English Literacy/Civics Education<br />

• Remediation for high school exit exam<br />

• Work Ready assessment remediation (GAP Training)<br />

• Work Place Adult Education Eligibility for Enrollment<br />

Eligibility for Enrollment<br />

Individuals sixteen and older are eligible for enrollment in a state<br />

approved adult <strong>edu</strong>cation program.<br />

However, 16-, 17,- 18- and 19-year-olds must meet <strong>the</strong> following<br />

criteria:<br />

1. All individuals must provide an <strong>of</strong>ficial withdrawal from <strong>the</strong><br />

last school attended, or a letter signed by <strong>the</strong> superintendent/<br />

designee verifying student is no longer enrolled in <strong>the</strong> public/<br />

private school system. Home school applicants must provide<br />

a letter signed by <strong>the</strong> superintendent/designee verifying<br />

completion or withdrawal from home study program.<br />

2. All individuals must provide positive identification with pro<strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> age. Acceptable forms <strong>of</strong> photo identification are valid<br />

Driver’s License, State Identification Card, Military I.D., or<br />

Passport. Pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> residence is NOT a requirement to enroll<br />

in <strong>the</strong> adult <strong>edu</strong>cation program. (However, pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> residency<br />

is required to be eligible for <strong>the</strong> HOPE Voucher.)<br />

Ages 16 or 17:<br />

1. All individuals must provide a statement from a parent or<br />

legal guardian supporting <strong>the</strong> request.<br />

Exceptions:<br />

1. Enrolled in a special program for at-risk students, i.e., State<br />

and Federal Social Service Agencies, Youth Challenge, and<br />

Private Providers (documentation required)<br />

2. Emancipated (documentation required)<br />

3. Court ordered/adjusted (documentation required)<br />

4. Married (documentation required)<br />

Ages 18 or 19:<br />

1. Individuals 18 or 19 years old whose high school class has<br />

not graduated must provide an <strong>of</strong>ficial withdrawal form from<br />

<strong>the</strong> last attended school before entering <strong>the</strong> adult <strong>edu</strong>cation<br />

program.<br />

Application Proc<strong>edu</strong>res<br />

1. Complete <strong>the</strong> application (Request to Enter A State-Approved<br />

Adult Education Program for Under-Age Youth) obtainable<br />

from <strong>the</strong> local adult <strong>edu</strong>cation program (provide supporting<br />

documentation).<br />

2. Submit <strong>the</strong> application and supporting documentation to <strong>the</strong><br />

local Dean <strong>of</strong> Adult Education.<br />

3. The Dean <strong>of</strong> Adult Education will review <strong>the</strong> application<br />

package and enroll <strong>the</strong> individual based upon receipt <strong>of</strong><br />

appropriate supporting documentation.<br />

GED ® Testing<br />

Testing for <strong>the</strong> GED (General Educational Development) diploma<br />

is sch<strong>edu</strong>led monthly. A person must be 18 years old or older and<br />

out <strong>of</strong> high school to take <strong>the</strong> GED exam. A valid driver’s license<br />

or o<strong>the</strong>r approved identification is required. The cost <strong>of</strong> testing is<br />

$160. Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds may apply for special<br />

needs testing and be approved by <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Adult Education/<br />

GED Testing. Admission to <strong>the</strong> adult <strong>edu</strong>cation program does not<br />

constitute permission for GED testing. The Application for Special<br />

Needs Testing for Under-Age Youth must be submitted along with<br />

appropriate supporting documentation to <strong>the</strong> GED examiner for<br />

review and recommendation to <strong>the</strong> state GED administrator for<br />

approval/non-approval. Individuals must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong><br />

twelve (12) classroom hours prior to applying for GED testing or<br />

score a minimum <strong>of</strong> 500 points on <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial GED practice test or<br />

score 80 percent on o<strong>the</strong>r practice tests. To pass <strong>the</strong> GED exam,<br />

<strong>the</strong> examinee must score an average <strong>of</strong> 450 on each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five<br />

sub-tests.<br />
