The Sunshine Coast is one of the only communities of its size in Canada that does not have road access or any land-based scheduled air services. There are two companies that provide float plane service from Sechelt. While this is an important and valued service, it is weather dependent, as the aircraft must fly using Visual Flight Rules (VFR) which restricts them to daylight only flying and in weather conditions that allow for a visual reference to the ground or water. The float planes used in the service to Sechelt have limited capacity for carrying baggage and they cannot be used by persons with mobility challenges. In addition to enabling scheduled all-weather air services, the certified airport will be able to accept fixed wing medevac aircraft for this important service for the Sunshine Coast. Currently all medevacs are done using helicopters. These helicopters are not able to operate in icing conditions with the result that for approximately 10 to 15 days per year, medevac flights are not able to serve the Sunshine Coast. A further benefit of fixed wing medevac operations will accrue to the health system as fixed wing aircraft operate at approximately one-third of the cost of helicopters. A plan for funding the runway up-grades has been prepared and the District is working to secure the funding for this infrastructure up-grade. This funding package does not include needed up-grades to the parking area or the terminal building. It will be difficult for air operators to operate from the current terminal building and accessibility to the building from the parking area will be difficult for persons with mobility challenges. Funding from the Infrastructure Improvement program will enhance the overall project by providing appropriate passenger handling facilities concurrent with the runway infrastructure rehabilitation project. As well, the renovation and addition, once completed, will provide an important resource suitable for after-hours community functions such as fundraising dinners, Chamber of Commerce business after business events, etc. Sechelt’s Mayor and Council view the airport as one of the most important short term strategic priorities for the District. As the airport will serve the whole southern Sunshine Coast, the District has the full support of the Town of Gibsons, the Sechelt Indian Government District and the Sunshine Coast Regional District.
