Suicide <strong>in</strong> rural and remote areas <strong>of</strong> Australia<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> the current research<br />
and structure <strong>of</strong> report<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> report conta<strong>in</strong>s four ma<strong>in</strong> chapters. Chapter<br />
One presents a literature review on the topic <strong>of</strong><br />
rural suicide <strong>in</strong> Australia. Th<strong>is</strong> review will <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
a detailed presentation <strong>of</strong> past research on at-r<strong>is</strong>k<br />
groups, suicide methods, and r<strong>is</strong>k and protective<br />
factors. Chapter Two conta<strong>in</strong>s the results <strong>of</strong> an<br />
analys<strong>is</strong> on the contextual <strong>in</strong>fl uence on suicide <strong>in</strong><br />
metropolitan, regional and remote areas; while<br />
Chapter Three shows results <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
analys<strong>is</strong> from a case-control psychological autopsy<br />
study <strong>of</strong> suicide deaths compared to sudden death<br />
controls. Th<strong>is</strong> specifi cally focuses on key areas that<br />
are relevant to suicide mortality: access to health<br />
care and mental illness. Th<strong>is</strong> quantitative analys<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />
illustrated with four case studies from rural areas.<br />
We exam<strong>in</strong>e ex<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g suicide prevention strategies <strong>in</strong><br />
rural areas <strong>in</strong> Chapter Four <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> report, and make<br />
suggestions <strong>for</strong> how suicide prevention strategies<br />
can be strengthened or improved.<br />
As refl ected <strong>in</strong> the chapters <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> report,<br />
our approach seeks to be as hol<strong>is</strong>tic as possible<br />
by consider<strong>in</strong>g the psychological, environmental,<br />
and cultural factors which impact on self-<strong>in</strong>fl icted<br />
deaths occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rural Australia. We hope that<br />
progress<strong>in</strong>g knowledge <strong>in</strong> these key areas can lead<br />
to the development <strong>of</strong> targeted and multi-dynamic<br />
prevention <strong>in</strong>itiatives and the eventual reduction <strong>of</strong><br />
suicide <strong>in</strong> the Australian population.<br />
