Suicide <strong>in</strong> rural and remote areas <strong>of</strong> Australia<br />

Ex<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g suicide prevention strategies <strong>in</strong> rural areas<br />

are exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Chapter Four <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> report. Few<br />

programs reported the results <strong>of</strong> their activities;<br />

even fewer have conducted (and publ<strong>is</strong>hed) an<br />

evaluation <strong>of</strong> the treatment on suicidal behaviours.<br />

A major problem was that most programs addressed<br />

the <strong>is</strong>sue <strong>of</strong> suicide prevention <strong>in</strong>directly. As a result,<br />

there were few activities specifi cally available <strong>for</strong><br />

suicide <strong>in</strong> rural contexts.<br />

Recommendations<br />

Greater recognition <strong>of</strong> the potential stressors<br />

associated with liv<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rural contexts<br />

<strong>is</strong> needed by federal and state governments, healthservice<br />

providers and the academic community.<br />

Some potential strategies to combat r<strong>is</strong>ks <strong>for</strong> suicide<br />

<strong>in</strong> rural contexts could be:<br />

1. Provid<strong>in</strong>g greater social and economic support<br />

to persons experienc<strong>in</strong>g diffi cult circumstances<br />

(e.g. drought, fl oods) <strong>in</strong> rural areas. Th<strong>is</strong> could<br />

help <strong>in</strong> alleviat<strong>in</strong>g fi nancial stress;<br />

2. To facilitate further education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> persons <strong>in</strong> rural contexts. Expand<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

skill-base <strong>of</strong> persons resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rural areas<br />

can allow greater social mobility and <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

employment opportunities;<br />

3. Address<strong>in</strong>g the lifestyle r<strong>is</strong>ks associated with<br />

suicide <strong>in</strong> rural localities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g problems<br />

<strong>in</strong> balanc<strong>in</strong>g the compet<strong>in</strong>g demands <strong>of</strong> work<br />

and family, the <strong>in</strong>appropriate use <strong>of</strong> alcohol,<br />

and recogn<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g and seek<strong>in</strong>g help <strong>for</strong> mental or<br />

physical signs <strong>of</strong> stress;<br />

4. Encourag<strong>in</strong>g the development <strong>of</strong> culturally<br />

appropriate and fl exible sources <strong>of</strong> support.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> may <strong>in</strong>clude “upskill<strong>in</strong>g” key members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the community to provide treatment and/<br />

or referral services. Th<strong>is</strong> strategy would also<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude encourag<strong>in</strong>g persons <strong>in</strong> rural contexts<br />

to seek help <strong>for</strong> mental d<strong>is</strong>tress and suicidality.<br />
