Suicide <strong>in</strong> rural and remote areas <strong>of</strong> Australia<br />
with h<strong>is</strong> partner and caused many arguments. In<br />
the fi ve months be<strong>for</strong>e h<strong>is</strong> death, the deceased<br />
would do anyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a dr<strong>in</strong>k; he even stole<br />
money from h<strong>is</strong> partner to buy alcohol. He had<br />
also cheated on her <strong>in</strong> the three months be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
h<strong>is</strong> death. Dur<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> time, their relationship was<br />
turbulent and they had ongo<strong>in</strong>g separations due<br />
to d<strong>is</strong>cord. However, the deceased appeared<br />
to be more upset about the <strong>in</strong>juries h<strong>is</strong> son<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ed after be<strong>in</strong>g severely beaten. The<br />
deceased seemed to have little contact with h<strong>is</strong><br />
daughter.<br />
together at the back <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> house, just near the creek.<br />
Approximately half an hour after be<strong>in</strong>g seen by h<strong>is</strong><br />
stepson and a friend, he was found deceased. The<br />
deceased’s case manager “was quite upset about<br />
th<strong>is</strong> patient’s death <strong>for</strong> several weeks”.<br />
It appears that the deceased was never diagnosed<br />
with a mental illness. However, he was conv<strong>in</strong>ced<br />
that people were talk<strong>in</strong>g about him which was a<br />
source <strong>of</strong> worry. The deceased also <strong>of</strong>ten felt that<br />
“there were people outside talk<strong>in</strong>g but no one was<br />
there”, but th<strong>is</strong> would only happen after a night <strong>of</strong><br />
dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. In these states, he could also feel “itchy<br />
like someth<strong>in</strong>g crawl<strong>in</strong>g on him”.<br />
The deceased had made many statements <strong>of</strong><br />
hopelessness; he couldn’t adequately provide <strong>for</strong><br />
h<strong>is</strong> family fi nancially and he was unable to control<br />
h<strong>is</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. Most days be<strong>for</strong>e h<strong>is</strong> death, he talked<br />
about “how bad” he felt about th<strong>is</strong>. However, he<br />
generally wouldn’t tell people about h<strong>is</strong> problems<br />
or how he was feel<strong>in</strong>g; the deceased “didn’t<br />
communicate h<strong>is</strong> thoughts”.<br />
The mother <strong>of</strong> the deceased’s children died by<br />
suicide; the deceased had always said he would<br />
never leave h<strong>is</strong> children <strong>in</strong> the same way. He knew<br />
about 20 people who had killed themselves over<br />
a few years. The deceased did not leave a note<br />
and had not given any statements that <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />
that he had <strong>in</strong>tentions <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> own life. On<br />
the day <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> death, he was shak<strong>in</strong>g, “fi dgety” and<br />
“crav<strong>in</strong>g a dr<strong>in</strong>k”. Some <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> friends were dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
