54 Suicide in rural and remote areas of Australia Table 14 presents information concerning visits to healthcare professionals in the 3 months prior to death. In sudden-death controls, visiting a GP in the previous three months was slightly, but not signifi cantly, more frequent, compared to suicide victims. Comparisons between the two suicide groups showed that this was more frequent in urban areas (77%), compared to rural areas (68.8%); however, this was not signifi cant. Compared to the sudden-death control group, suicide group was more likely to visit a psychiatrist in the three months prior to death; however, there were no signifi cant differences between rural and urban suicide cases (31.3% in rural and 28.4% in urban suicide victims). Multiple contacts were more frequent in suicide group compared to sudden-death control group in both areas, without any signifi cant difference between rural and urban suicide cases (42.9% in rural suicide and 48% in urban suicide). According to the NOK, suicide victims had a higher risk of being diagnosed with a mental illness during their life, compared to their sudden-death control group, in both regions. Considering the previous analysis on psychiatric disorders at the time of death (SCID-I), this might indicate a considerable under-diagnosis of mental illnesses, not only in the suicide group but also among sudden-death controls. Life events The most frequent life events were related to family, relationships, work and fi nances. As presented in Table 15, work and fi nancial events in the year prior to death predicted suicide in rural and urban areas (all specifi c life events are presented in Appendix B).
