Suicide <strong>in</strong> rural and remote areas <strong>of</strong> Australia<br />

These numbers re<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>ce other fi nd<strong>in</strong>gs which have<br />

shown that, while suicide rates may have decl<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> metropolitan and rural (regional) areas, rates<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> remote areas (Page et al,<br />

2007). Th<strong>is</strong> study found that th<strong>is</strong> difference was most<br />

signifi cant <strong>in</strong> males; the female suicide rates <strong>in</strong> rural<br />

(regional) and remote areas were actually smaller<br />

than rates <strong>in</strong> metropolitan areas at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

the time period under study but then <strong>in</strong>creased to<br />

reach similar numbers. Some research has argued<br />

that there has been a decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> young male suicide<br />

overall (Morrell et al, 2007); however, th<strong>is</strong> decrease<br />

may not have translated directly to rural areas.<br />

Despite these higher rates, liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a rural area itself<br />

alone may not be a r<strong>is</strong>k factor but, <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

with other r<strong>is</strong>k factors, may lead to a higher<br />

vulnerability to suicide among its <strong>in</strong>habitants (Taylor<br />

et al, 2005a). Like suicides <strong>in</strong> metropolitan areas,<br />

suicides that occur <strong>in</strong> rural areas (regional and<br />

remote) are multi-faceted (Alston, 2010; Mac<strong>in</strong>tyre<br />

et al, 2002); relationship breakdowns, legal <strong>is</strong>sues,<br />

physical and mental illnesses, as well as <strong>is</strong>sues<br />

more directly related to farm<strong>in</strong>g, such as the impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> drought, can all be connected to suicide <strong>in</strong> these<br />

areas (Thacore & Varma, 2000). High-r<strong>is</strong>k alcohol<br />

consumption has been l<strong>in</strong>ked to an <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

vulnerability to suicide, especially <strong>in</strong> rural areas,<br />

where there are correspond<strong>in</strong>g high rates <strong>of</strong> alcohol<br />

consumption and suicide (Cantor & Slater, 1997;<br />

Miller et al, 2010). Further, a study <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> socio-economic status on suicide found<br />

stronger associations between rural residency, lower<br />

socio-economic status and suicide, especially with<br />

males (Page et al, 2002). The use <strong>of</strong> lethal methods<br />

may also contribute to the higher rates <strong>of</strong> suicide<br />

<strong>in</strong> rural areas with fi rearms be<strong>in</strong>g the most common<br />

method used, <strong>in</strong> part related to easier accessibility,<br />

especially among older men (Hirsch, 2006; Klieve<br />

et al, 2009a).<br />
