Studying thematically linked works in a variety of genres, we develop our ability to write interpretive papers analyzing fiction, poetry and drama. We focus on the ways style creates meaning, both in the authors studied and in our own writing. Using a comparative approach, this class intensifies the focus on critical thinking and research, adding emphasis to connections with such extra-literary fields as biology, economics, history, philosophy and psychology. Applying techniques learned from linguistics and philology, we contemplate problems involved in translation and consider the kinds of significance generated by style. We also delve more deeply into theoretical approaches to literature, examining their assumptions and the ways methodology can affect our interpretation. Letter grade only. Transferable to CSU; UC.
