SPAN G180 - Elementary Spanish 1 5 units
No prior knowledge of Spanish is assumed. Begins to
develop language competencies such as listening,
speaking, reading & writing. The ultimate goal to achieve
oral proficiency to enable students to communicate on a
basic level. This course is equivalent to two years of high
school Spanish.
Optional pass/no pass grade. Transferable to CSU; UC.

WORLD LANGUAGES COURSE
PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS
Some Languages courses have mandatory prerequisites. If you are planning to enroll in
one of these courses, you must meet one of the following:
1. You must have completed the prerequisite course with a grade of “C” or better at GWC
after 1989 or be currently enrolled in it,
Or
2. You must have completed the prerequisite course at another college with a grade
of “C” or better. To show proof of the prerequisite completion, bring a copy of your
transcript or grade report to the Admissions Office prior to enrolling. Please allow 48
hours for processing.
Or
3. You must have completed with a grade of “C” or better, two (2) years of High School
Language in the language you are enrolling in to be eligible for G185, three (3) years
for G280 or four (4) years for G285. To show proof of completion, bring a copy of your
High School transcript to the Admissions Office prior to enrolling. Please allow 48
hours for processing.
Students wishing to challenge a prerequisite or placement may contact the Assessment
Center for further information. Prerequisite Challenge forms can be obtained from the
Assessment Center. Instructions are provided on the Challenge form.

The emphasis on this course is on comprehension,
oral communication, understanding and speaking
intermediate material, reading and writing Spanish
correctly.
