Admissions/Registration
Basic Skills Assessment Test
Assessment in English, mathematics, reading, and student
skills is recommended for all students; however, these
assessment tests are required of new students who are
seeking a degree, certificate, or have a transfer goal. (see
exemption criteria.) Assessment may be required to meet
prerequisities for specific courses. The results of these tests are
then used to assist the student in making appropriate course
selections. A schedule of the testing sessions is available
online at www.goldenwestcollege.edu/assessment/ or in
the Admissions Office. To make an appointment for testing
you can visit the Assessment Center in Business 109 or call
714-895-8388. Students may waive the English/Reading
placement test by presenting official evidence to the Records
Clerk in the Admissions office with any one of the following:
• A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement Examination
in English Composition, or
• A passing score on the California State Equivalency
Examination, or
• Completion of a college course equivalent to Golden West
College’s English G100 or higher with a “C” grade or better.
Students may waive the Mathematics placement test by
presenting official evidence to the Records Clerk in the
Admissions office of the completion of a college course
equivalent to Golden West College’s Mathematics G030,
Intermediate Algebra, or higher with a grade of “C” or better.
Students may not have to take the Assessment test at GWC
if they have test scores from another California Community
College (test scores must be within the last 2 years). If a student
has valid test scores, they can take them to the Assessment
center for review.
All students have the right to challenge or appeal any step in
the matriculation process. Forms are available in the Admissions
Office for this purpose. Students who refuse matriculation
services will not receive priority registration. If you have any
questions regarding any of the steps in the admissions process,
please contact the Matriculation Clerk at (714) 895-8207.
STEP 3-ORIENTATION
Upon completion of the assessment process, new students
are expected to complete an online orientation session (see
exemptions). The Orientation is designed to acquaint the
student with the many programs and support services available
at the college and to assist the student in selecting his/her first
semester courses. Additional information regarding the Online
Orientation is available in the Counseling Office.
Important Note: Students must complete their orientation
session at least 24 hours before their registration
appointment date and time.
Student Educational Plan (SEP) - Once classes have begun,
students may be notified to make an appointment with a
counselor to develop a Student Educational Plan (SEP). The
SEP is a formalized document which assists the student in
identifying the courses and services needed to meet their
educational goals and objectives. It should be completed and
on file before the end of the semester.
Ability to Profit by Instruction
In order to remain enrolled at Golden West College, a student
must be able to profit from instruction. Students who have
English language deficiencies are urged to enroll in basic
English classes. Failure to do so may lead to their being dropped
from their other courses. Contact a counselor for assistance. If
an instructor determines that a student’s deficiency in English
may result in physical harm to him/her or to others in the class
i.e., shop course, physical science lab, etc., the student may be
required to withdraw from the course.
STEP 4-REGISTRATION
Registration is by appointment online via your MyGWC portal
page. Appointments are assigned based on a priority policy
established by the District. New and returning students
receive their appointments in the order their application was
submitted. You can check your registration appointment date
and time online via your MyGWC STUDENT portal page under
Registration Status.
REMEMBER you can only register on or after your
registration appointment date and time.
Things to Know Before You Register
Make sure you have completed your placement testing, proof of
pre-requisites, and/or attended an orientation. BE PREPARED.
Select plenty of alternative classes before you register.
Check for:
(a) Prerequisites.
(b)Concurrent enrollment or co-requisites that require
you to enroll in more than one class or section.
(e.g., lecture/lab combinations)
(c) Check the class schedule via your MyGWC portal page for
available classes. Have a back-up plan in case the class you
want is closed.
Clear Holds: Outstanding holds can be viewed via MyGWC
(Registration Status). You must clear all holds which block
registration before you will be able to register. If a hold exists
on your records, a contact number will be displayed so that you
may call for specific information regarding the hold.
