STEP 1-APPLY FOR ADMISSION<br />

Are you eligible to attend<br />

Anyone 18 years of age or older and who can profit from<br />

instruction qualifies for admission. If under age 18, you will<br />

qualify for admission if you have satisfied one of these:<br />

1. Graduated from high school.<br />

2. Passed the California High School Certificate of Proficiency<br />

Test or the equivalent.<br />

3. Completed the <strong>10</strong>th grade and received permission from<br />

your high school principal and parent to attend.<br />

New and Returning Students<br />

Students who are enrolling for the first time or returning to<br />

<strong>Golden</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>College</strong> must complete an admissions application.<br />

Students are encouraged to apply on-line from the <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>West</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> website (www.goldenwestcollege.edu). Applications<br />

are also available in the GWC Admissions Office. Students<br />

should submit an application as soon as possible, since<br />

registration appointment times are issued on a first applied,<br />

earliest appointment basis (new and returning students).<br />

International Students<br />

If you are an international student, you will need to submit an<br />

international student application directly to the International<br />

Student Program. The International Student Program will<br />

assist you with all of your necessary appointments. Contact<br />

the International Student Program for the International<br />

Student Application and view book at (714) 895-8146, or go to<br />

www.goldenwestcollege.edu and click on “International<br />

Student Program” to download an application.<br />

Disabled Students<br />

New students with verified disabilities may apply for<br />

admissions and services directly through the Accessibility<br />

Center of Education (ACE) Office located in the KOCE building.<br />

For additional information, please call 714-895-8721 (voice) or<br />

714-895-8350 (TTY).<br />

K-<strong>10</strong> Students<br />

K-<strong>10</strong>th grade students, who are prepared to perform at<br />

college level, may be eligible to enroll in advanced academic<br />

or vocational courses not available to them through<br />

their high school program. The student’s school and<br />

the college will determine eligibility for enrollment based<br />

on their judgment of the applicant’s ability to profit from<br />

instruction and the appropriateness of the course. Courses<br />

in English and mathematics will require assessment testing<br />

to determine placement level. Contact the Admissions and<br />

Records Office for additional information or visit our website at<br />

www.goldenwestcollege.edu/admissions/k12.html.<br />

Application confirmation - All admitted students will receive<br />

an account to log in to MyGWC, the college’s student/faculty<br />

web portal. Account (log in) information will be emailed (to<br />

the email address you supplied on your application) to new/<br />

Admissions to GWC<br />

Who May Apply<br />

returning students once the Admissions office has processed<br />

your application. This email will include information about<br />

your MyGWC account, student email address, registration<br />

appointment time and instructions on how to log in to<br />

MyGWC.<br />

Student Email Account<br />

The STUDENT email account issued by the college wil be the<br />

primary form of communication between the college and<br />

the student. It is critical to log in to this account and set up a<br />

password, keep this account active and to check it regularly for<br />

message and important information from the college. Students<br />

who have been issued a STUDENT email account by either Orange<br />

Coast <strong>College</strong> or Coastline, will use the original STUDENT email<br />

account. If the account has remained active, the password has<br />

remained the same.<br />

STEP 2-ASSESSMENT/PLACEMENT TEST<br />

Matriculation<br />

All students new to <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>College</strong> are expected to<br />

participate in the matriculation process. Some students may<br />

choose to be exempted if they meet one of the following<br />

criteria:<br />

1. Completed an A.A. degree or higher at an accredited<br />

United States college or university<br />

2. Completed 30 or more units at an accredited United States<br />

college or university.<br />

3. Completed 15 or more units with a cumulative GPA or<br />

2.0 or higher along with official evidence of one of the<br />

following:<br />

• Verified completion of college level course work in<br />

English, writing and mathematics (Intermediate Algebra<br />

or higher) with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

• Evaluation of learning skills (placement testing) from a<br />

California Community <strong>College</strong> within the last two years.<br />

• A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement<br />

Examination in English Composition.<br />

• A passing score on the California State University<br />

English Equivalency Examination.<br />

NOTE - Please provide official evidence to our Records<br />

department.<br />

4. Enrolling in a single one-semester, specialized job training<br />

course which is more than 6 units.<br />

5. Students who plan to take six 6 units or less and not pursue<br />

a degree or certificate. Once the student completes twelve<br />

(12) cumulative units they will need to matriculate.<br />

6. Concurrently enrolled K–12th grade school student<br />

attending with the recommendation of the school<br />

principal.<br />
