exploration will supplement the class work required<br />

elements of musical style (rhythm, melody, dynamics,<br />

texture, form, timbre), deepening the experience by<br />

considering culturally bound and intercultural musical<br />

features within the context of <strong>West</strong>ern “classical” music,<br />

plus the interactions between <strong>West</strong>ern and non-<strong>West</strong>ern<br />

musics. However, our list of reading, listening and<br />

viewing assignments will feature a broader selection<br />

than those offered in the usual Music G<strong>10</strong>1/HumG120<br />

bibliography, discography and videography. The course<br />

will also intensify the focus on research, evaluation of<br />

personal taste and critical “active” listening. Attendance<br />

at and review of three professional performances<br />

required.<br />

Sign Language Interpreting<br />

This course is designed to provide students with<br />

the historical and theoretical knowledge of the sign<br />

language interpreting profession. Students will be given<br />

an overview of the profession, the deaf community and<br />

the requirements needed to prepare to become a sign<br />

language interpreter.<br />

This course reviews the principles, concepts and theories<br />

of interpreting and introduces the processes, skills and<br />

techniques of interpreting from English to American<br />

Sign Language. Both consecutive and simultaneous<br />

interpreting are explored. The student will begin the<br />

development of skills required to accurately interpret a<br />

spoken message into sign language.<br />
