same way at <strong>the</strong> opposite cross corner. Thus held we stretched out our arms as far as we<br />

could, holding <strong>the</strong> slate in <strong>the</strong> full light away from <strong>the</strong> table. My right h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Mr.<br />

<strong>Eglinton</strong>'s left still touched <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> our respective neighbours. At once, within <strong>the</strong> slates,<br />

<strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> rapid writing was heard, <strong>and</strong> in a very short time, <strong>the</strong> usual three small raps<br />

were given as a signal for us to look at <strong>the</strong> result. On <strong>the</strong> slate were twenty-<strong>two</strong> lines<br />

containing one hundred <strong>and</strong> forty-<strong>two</strong> words signed by <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a near relative <strong>of</strong> mine<br />

who left this world some years ago. Before I glanced at <strong>the</strong> signature <strong>the</strong> strong resemblance<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small, close writing to that <strong>of</strong> my friend amazed me, <strong>and</strong> when I came to read <strong>the</strong><br />

written lines my astonishment increased. I found in <strong>the</strong>m a verbatim quotation from a letter<br />

written by me <strong>and</strong> posted to New Zeal<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> week before, <strong>and</strong> also a remark relating to my<br />

private affairs which seemed to me to point conclusively to <strong>the</strong> identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> writer whose<br />

signature was appended. I had spoken to no one <strong>of</strong> what I had said in <strong>the</strong> letter sent many<br />

days before, <strong>and</strong> I am not conscious that it was in my thoughts as I held <strong>the</strong> slates. Below<br />

<strong>the</strong> letter to me, in a large <strong>and</strong> quite different h<strong>and</strong>writing, was a message to my husb<strong>and</strong>,<br />

who was not present."<br />

The next experiment was not less valuable :— " A soda-water tumbler was reversed on <strong>the</strong><br />

slate over a crumb <strong>of</strong> pencil, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n pressed <strong>the</strong> glass up against <strong>the</strong> under-surface <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> table. That is to say, Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong> put <strong>the</strong> slate under <strong>the</strong> table, with <strong>the</strong> reversed<br />

glass upon it, <strong>and</strong> forced <strong>the</strong> tumbler hard against <strong>the</strong> wood by pressing up <strong>the</strong> slate with his<br />

h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> wrist <strong>and</strong> arm being clearly seen by us. Writing was heard <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> three raps<br />

were given for us to look at <strong>the</strong> slate. Within <strong>the</strong> circle described by <strong>the</strong> rim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> glass<br />

we found a message in a small h<strong>and</strong>, quite different from <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>writing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter<br />

addressed to me." (Fig. 10.)<br />

It was during this period that a startling phenomenon occurred—no less than <strong>the</strong> instantaneous<br />

transmission <strong>of</strong> letters between London <strong>and</strong> Calcutta. I say "startling" advisedly. It is<br />

assuredly so for <strong>the</strong> world at large, but Spiritualists, who alone can form any idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

power <strong>of</strong> spirits over matter, will readily underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> phenomenon. This carrying <strong>of</strong> letters
