in a room well lighted by a gas ch<strong>and</strong>elier, which hung directly over <strong>the</strong> table, when Mr.<br />

<strong>Eglinton</strong> asked that a piece <strong>of</strong> paper should be initialled by members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> circle <strong>and</strong> placed<br />

in a book. Mr. Pearce accordingly produced some note-paper, which was initialled at <strong>the</strong><br />

four corners by Mr. Everitt, Mr. Pearce, <strong>and</strong> myself—while I also wrote my initials <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sitting at <strong>the</strong> back. This piece <strong>of</strong> paper I, at Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong>'s request, placed inside<br />

a book, which I laid before me on <strong>the</strong> table, with my left h<strong>and</strong> upon it. Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong> put<br />

his h<strong>and</strong> upon mine for a few seconds <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n requested me to open <strong>the</strong> book. I did so <strong>and</strong><br />

found that <strong>the</strong> note-paper had disappeared, <strong>and</strong> in its place was <strong>the</strong> address card <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> my<br />

daughters. On one side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> card was written <strong>the</strong> following message :—' / am taking care <strong>of</strong><br />

Frank, to whom 1 scud my regards. Dun' I be anxious.'<br />

<strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> my sons,<br />

who was at home ill. We were not <strong>the</strong>n aware how serious his illness was. He departed<br />

this <strong>life</strong> three days afterwards. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side was <strong>the</strong> following message purporting to be<br />

from a dear friend (a German), who entered <strong>the</strong> spirit-world in 1874, <strong>and</strong> from whom we have
