ab<strong>and</strong>oned. The congregation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reverend prelate proved more liberal <strong>and</strong> just than <strong>the</strong> priest<br />

himself.<br />

The seances given to Canon Gilbert seem to have had a prejudicial effect upon Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong>'s<br />

health. He became ailing, <strong>and</strong> after a short visit to Birmingham <strong>and</strong> Kingston, at <strong>the</strong> former <strong>of</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong> seances were not <strong>of</strong> a satisfactory character, his health finally gave way, <strong>and</strong> culminated<br />

on May 8th in a serious illness. All engagements had to be cancelled, <strong>and</strong> being invited by Dr. <strong>and</strong><br />

Mrs. Nichols to spend <strong>the</strong> summer at <strong>the</strong>ir pretty place at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malvern Hills, he accordingly<br />

left London for that town on June 2nd. He was so ill <strong>and</strong> altered in appearance that when<br />

met by his friends at <strong>the</strong> station <strong>the</strong>y failed to recognise him.
