Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong>, embodying an expressed wish <strong>of</strong> mine, asked whe<strong>the</strong>r 'Ernest' would give us<br />
any hints as to <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r development <strong>of</strong><br />
'<br />
power<br />
'<br />
in my nieces, <strong>and</strong> a message <strong>of</strong> one<br />
hundred <strong>and</strong> one words, appositely answering <strong>the</strong> question, was written within <strong>two</strong> slates<br />
held by Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong> on <strong>the</strong> shoulder <strong>of</strong> Mary, her h<strong>and</strong> also grasping <strong>the</strong> slate <strong>and</strong> one<br />
<strong>of</strong> his <strong>two</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s that held it. The writing was very distinctly heard by all present in<br />
this experiment, as in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. The locked slate, having remained untouched in <strong>the</strong> meantime,<br />
was again taken up from <strong>the</strong> table by Mr. <strong>Eglinton</strong>, <strong>and</strong> held by him <strong>and</strong> my niece above<br />
<strong>the</strong> table. Writing was heard by us, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> slate being opened, a pertinent answer<br />
to <strong>the</strong> written question was found. Lying inside <strong>the</strong> slate was <strong>the</strong> piece <strong>of</strong> string that had<br />
been removed from my hook-slate."<br />
Mr. Collingwood fur<strong>the</strong>r expresses himself as having borne in mind throughout this<br />
seance <strong>the</strong> statements put forward by Labouchere, Maskelyne, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> considers<br />
that <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ories as to how <strong>the</strong>se writings are produced are absolutely untenable, if not<br />
ridiculous.<br />
