less than half a minute with <strong>the</strong> usual signal <strong>of</strong> completion. The slates were cut apart, <strong>and</strong><br />
on <strong>the</strong> inner surface <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slates was found a message containing one hundred <strong>and</strong><br />
thirty words.<br />
At ano<strong>the</strong>r time <strong>the</strong> slates, prepared as aforesaid, were held over <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sitter<br />
at / (Figs. 13 <strong>and</strong> 17). was I sitting at g, <strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r friend at h. The person sitting at<br />
/, though unable to see, in <strong>the</strong> usual manner, <strong>the</strong> actions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medium, was, however,<br />
enabled to add his testimony to that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sitters, inasmuch as he saw every<br />
movement reflected in <strong>the</strong> mirror in front <strong>of</strong> him.<br />

The actual production <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> writing without visible agency has also been witnessed.<br />
An ordinary tumbler was inverted on a slate with a crumb <strong>of</strong> pencil underneath it, <strong>and</strong><br />
placed in position at <strong>the</strong> corner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> table, as shown in Fig. 18. The sound <strong>of</strong> writing<br />
being heard, permission was asked to look under <strong>the</strong> table. This was given, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
pencil was seen tracing a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> writing, moving from side to side without any<br />
visible<br />
cause.<br />
" But," says one, " it is as clear as daylight that <strong>the</strong> writing has been prepared by some<br />
chemical means, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> cleaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slates beforeh<strong>and</strong> with a damp sponge is allowed<br />
only as a blind." My answer is, that although this assertion might be urged against a<br />
very few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> experiments now being made, day after day, by intelligent <strong>and</strong> educated
