Known shipments of steam coal from Eastern <strong>Kentucky</strong> to<br />

power plants within the United States decreased by 39 percent<br />

in 2012 to 30.1 million tons. The largest markets <strong>for</strong><br />

Eastern <strong>Kentucky</strong> coal are traditionally located in the Southeast,<br />

and were led by Georgia, South Carolina, and North<br />

Carolina during the year. Overall, coal mined in Eastern<br />

<strong>Kentucky</strong> was shipped to 16 different states in 2012.<br />
