On-Site Activity Employment Percentage Total 644 100% Surface 306 48% Underground 221 34% Preparation Plant 109 17% Office 8 1% Between 2008 and 2011, coal production in Ohio County increased by 304%. Bolstered by production from three active surface mines (and two smaller underground sites), Ohio County produced more than 7.2 million tons of coal during 2012. Overall, Ohio County accounted for approximately 7.9 percent of statewide production during the year. Since 2007, direct employment by coal companies in Ohio County has been steadily increasing. In 2012, coal companies operating in Ohio County on average employed 644 people in a variety of capacities. Surface mine sites employed around 300 miners full-time during the year, while underground mines employed 221 miners.
