Laurel County <strong>Coal</strong> Market<br />

The Elmer Smith Power Plant operated by Owensboro Municipal<br />

Utilities was the largest consumer of Laurel County steam<br />

coal, receiving 84 percent of county shipments during 2012.<br />

<strong>Coal</strong> from Knott County was also shipped to the Amos Power<br />

Plant of West Virginia, and the Simon Power Plant located in<br />

Michigan. In total, 164 thousand tons of coal were shipped<br />

from Laurel County to power plants in 2012.<br />
