Three coal mines and one preparation plant in Henderson<br />

County produced 1.55 million tons of coal in 2012, which<br />

was 1.7 percent of total production across the Commonwealth.<br />

Henderson County production decreased by 36.9<br />

percent from 2011. Since production spiked at over 4 million<br />

tons in 1992, output from coal mines in Henderson County<br />

has decreased gradually over the past 20 years.<br />

<strong>Coal</strong> mines in Henderson County employed on average a<br />

total of 185 persons full-time in 2012. Total mining employment<br />

in the county decreased by 34 percent compared with<br />

2011. During 2012, surface mines were the largest source<br />

of coal mine employment in Henderson County. However,<br />

through 2012 direct employment at underground mines decreased<br />

drastically.<br />
