Since a temporary stoppage in 2007, coal production in<br />

Ohio County has increased during the past four years, led by<br />

the development of surface mine sites.<br />

Between 2008 and 2011, coal production in Ohio County<br />

increased by 304%. Bolstered by production from three active<br />

surface mines (and two smaller underground sites), Ohio<br />

County produced more than 7.2 million tons of coal during<br />

2012. Overall, Ohio County accounted <strong>for</strong> approximately<br />

7.9 percent of statewide production during the year.<br />

Since 2007, direct employment by coal companies in Ohio<br />

County has been steadily increasing. In 2012, coal companies<br />

operating in Ohio County on average employed 644<br />

people in a variety of capacities. Surface mine sites employed<br />

around 300 miners full-time during the year, while<br />

underground mines employed 221 miners. <strong>Coal</strong> preparation<br />

plants and mine offices in Ohio County were staffed by<br />

slightly more than one hundred employees.<br />
