During 2012, there were 29 counties in <strong>Kentucky</strong> that registered<br />
coal production — seven in the Western <strong>Coal</strong>field<br />
and twenty-two in the Eastern <strong>Coal</strong>field — an increase of<br />
five counties compared with 2011. The five counties that<br />
initiated or resumed production in 2012 were all located in<br />
Eastern <strong>Kentucky</strong>.<br />
Up to 44 individual counties have at some time registered<br />
coal mining activity in <strong>Kentucky</strong> since 1960, though over the<br />
past five years no more than 29 counties have produced<br />
coal.<br />
Additionally, though 29 counties registered coal production<br />
in <strong>Kentucky</strong> in 2012, a total of 34 counties had active<br />
MSHA-permitted operations relating to coal production,<br />
processing, and/or transportation during the year. The following<br />
counties recorded coal-related labor hours in 2012,<br />
but produced no coal: Livingston, McLean, Boyd, Marshall,<br />
and Estill.<br />
