is down substantially, though production has been<br />

County in recent decades has come from surface mining operations.<br />

Total coal production in Daviess County decreased<br />

by 2.5 percent from 2011.<br />

Daviess County coal mines employed an average of 44 onsite<br />

employees in 2012, which was effectively the same as<br />

2011. The vast majority of these jobs were held by miners<br />

working on the surface. Historically, surface mine labor hours<br />

have been the largest source of coal mine employment in<br />
