In 2012, the Big Sandy Power Plant in Louisa, KY, was the<br />

predominant consumer of coal mined in Johnson County.<br />

The 8 active surface mines in Johnson County produced more<br />

than 327 thousand tons of coal in 2012. Although this reflected<br />

an increase of 41 percent from 2011, production was<br />

only a quarter of the county’s 20-year average. Gradually,<br />

coal production from underground mines in Johnson County<br />

has been replaced by surface mining operations, which accounted<br />

<strong>for</strong> 100percent of production in 2012.<br />

Johnson County’s 8 coal mines and 1 preparation plant employed<br />

85 people full-time in 2012, a marginal increase<br />

from 2011. Surface mine sites were the largest source of<br />

mining employment in the county during 2012. Employment<br />

at Johnson County coal mines has fallen by 66 percent from<br />
