During 2012, Leslie County had 17 active mine sites which<br />

produced more than 3 million tons of coal. Production in the<br />

county was led slightly by surface operations, which represented<br />

56 percent coal mining in 2012. Overall, Leslie County<br />

represented 3.3 percent of statewide coal production in<br />

2012, though production decreased by 29 percent compared<br />

to 2011.<br />

Direct coal mining employment in Leslie County has risen by<br />

31 percent since 2004, in part due to decreasing productivity<br />

at active surface and underground mines. In 2012, coal<br />

mining companies in Leslie County maintained around 700<br />

full-time employees with the majority of workers stationed at<br />

surface and underground operations. Direct coal mine employment<br />

in Leslie County during 2012 decreased by 15<br />

percent compared with 2011.<br />
