D O Ñ A A N A C O M M U N I T Y C O L L E G E 40 • Mechanical Drafting and Solid Modeling Option: Mechanical drafting, machine/manufacturing fundamentals, basic mechanical design, parametric solid modeling, and animation In addition to the Associate degree, the program also offers Certificates of Completion specializing in three option areas: Architectural Technology, Civil/Survey Technology, and Mechanical Drafting/Solid Modeling. Future students who are still in High school are encouraged to take courses in mathematics, science, English, and Drafting. Furthermore, Dual-Credit opportunities are available for high school students who wish to earn college credit while still in high school. These credits apply to both their High School credit requirements as well as the DACC Drafting & Design requirements. (For more information, refer to the section titled, “Early College Start,” within this Catalog.) Architecture Program Overview Students wishing to pursue a professional career in architecture may enroll in the Architecture option. Courses earn credit toward completion of the Associate Degree in Architecture at DACC, as well as toward the Bachelor of Arts/Science in Architecture at a ‘transfer’ University Architecture Program of their choice. Depending on the transfer university, most credits earned under this option are transferable to various university Architecture programs and apply toward Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Currently, the most popular transfer universities for DACC students include the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, N.M.), and Texas Tech University (Lubbock, Tx. & El Paso, Tx.), primarily due to proximity, ‘in-state’ tuition, and our written articulation agreements. (Texas Tech University will begin offering the 3rd & 4th years of their program at their El Paso center beginning Fall 2007). Acceptance into a transfer University’s Architecture Program requires an applications process as specified by the transfer university. This typically consists of an Admission Application, Letter of Intent, Creative Portfolio, and DACC Transcript. DACC cannot guarantee placement at any particular level into a transfer university’s architecture program as it is totally dependent on the student’s quality of portfolio/application, transcript at DACC, and the acceptance requirements of the university in question. For example, a final grade of B– or better is required in ARCT 101 and 104, and a final grade of C or better is required in all other courses of the DACC Architecture curriculum, in order to transfer to UNM. Potential students should contact the Architecture Advisor at DACC for assistance regarding course scheduling and transfer procedures (505-528-7310). Transition Tracks to Bachelor Degrees in Engineering Technology at N.M.S.U. Students planning on pursuing a bachelor’s degree in one of the engineering technology programs offered by NMSU may choose to follow the “transition track” within either the Civil/Survey Drafting or the Mechanical / Solid Modeling associate degree option. These transition tracks allow students to maximize the number of transferable credits while also earning an associate degree in Drafting and Design Technologies and gaining the knowledge and skills required for immediate employment in the field. Students pursuing this option must contact a Drafting and Design Technologies program adviser for current transfer-track requirements. A final grade of C or better is required in all courses in a transition-track plan. Additional Program Information Students receive training in modern classrooms and drafting and design laboratories equipped with the latest in computers, peripheral equipment, and professional software. Our laboratories and experienced faculty provide the highest quality training. The Drafting & Design Technologies program is now housed in at the new, East Mesa Campus of DACC (see map in Catalog). Classes are regularly scheduled during the day, evening, and weekends, as well as during the summer, to serve both full- and part-time students, including high school students who are participating in a dual-credit enrollment program. Courses are available at the various DACC locations, as well as selected high schools in the area. Students gain professional development and leadership skills through the Drafting and Graphics Association (DAGA) or the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). This national, award-winning student organization is a charter member of the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA), SkillsUSA, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and the Home Builders Institute (HBI), and the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). These student organizations also actively participate in numerous events and activities sponsored by the Las Cruces Homebuilders Association and the American Institute of Architects. Members take part in various functions sponsored by other professional associations and are involved in activities such as providing drafting services, recruiting at high schools, and participating in community service projects. Students compete in statewide and nationwide drafting contests sponsored by NAHB, ADDA, SkillsUSA, HBI, AIAS, and other organizations, earning them countless awards and recognition at the state and national levels. NOTE: For all Associate Degrees and Certificates, a final grade of C or better is required in all OEDG and ARCT courses. Associate Degree (67 credits minimum) NOTE: Courses appearing in italics may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree at NMSU.
