Fire Investigations
Associate of Applied Science Degree
527-7746
Fire investigations is a complex field borrowing from several other
disciplines. Because of its multidisciplinary nature, fire investigators
often find themselves playing more than one role.
In their role as detectives, they use a variety of methods to search for
clues as to how, where, and why a fire occurred. For example, an investigator
may check burn patterns and wiring, interview witnesses,
and use sniffing dogs or air-sampling machines to detect gasses. This
evidence can then be used to demonstrate probable cause in court.
At other times, fire investigators may act as law enforcement agents
who have the authority to swear out warrants and arrest suspects.
The Fire Investigations program at DACC provides a foundation for
those seeking a career in this challenging field, as it emphasizes the
application of scientific principles and subsequent legalities related
to fire and criminal investigations.
Certification is not granted automatically upon completion of this
program. Those planning to seek employment in the field of fire
investigations should consult the various associations granting certification.
Associate Degree (90 credits)
NOTE: In order to receive credit toward the associate degree, a student
must earn a final grade of C or better in all courses, be they
departmental or nondepartmental requirements. Courses appearing
in italics may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree at NMSU.
