D O Ñ A A N A C O M M U N I T Y C O L L E G E 66 Open Access Community Education is open to everyone, regardless of educational background. Courses and workshops offered are based on student interests and needs. Some courses are scheduled every semester, while others come and go depending on demand. There are neither grades nor degrees. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) may be earned in skill-building and professional-development type courses. Certificates of participation are available for all classes. Community Education is supported entirely by tuition fees; hence minimum enrollments are required in most classes. Classes vary in length from a few hours to eight or more weeks. Many Choices Community Education courses cover a wide range of subjects, broadly categorized as follows: • Arts & Crafts • Business & Careers • Communications • Community Awareness • Computer Skills • Cooking & Entertaining • Health & Fitness • Hobbies & Leisure Programs for Children • Home & Garden • Humanities • Languages • Music & Dance • Personal Growth • Safety • Sports/Recreation • Younger Set Courses for children may be found among Kids Community College in the Community Education offerings. Kids Community College is held during the summer. Classes and activities are planned to reflect the regular programs offered by the various departments at the community college. Student service clubs are involved in some of the programming. Community Locations Community Education classes are housed throughout the community. Locations include the community college, the main campus of NMSU, the public schools, University Terrace Good Samaritan Village, Mesilla Valley Mall, Branigan Cultural Center, Branigan Library, My Bookstore, and DACC’s Workforce Development Center. Classes may also be held in other county locations, depending on residents’ interests. Community Involvement Welcome Community Education welcomes suggestions and input. Potential students are encouraged to call or visit with inquiries, course ideas, and requests. Those with a specialty may consider becoming Community Education instructors and sharing their expertise with others. Continuing Education Units Continuing education units may be awarded for organized, noncredit, continuing education experiences. Continuing education units may not be used to fulfill degree requirements. Community Service Programs One community service project currently is being operated under the auspices of Community Education. It is the Mimbres Valley Learning Center, located at 2300 E. Pine St. in Deming. The MVLC offers an array of certificate, credit, noncredit, vocational, and recreational classes for everyone in Luna County, along with a customized training program for local businesses. Another integral part of the center is the DACC Truck Driving Academy. Academy for Learning in Retirement The Academy for Learning in Retirement is a program of educational opportunities of a scholarly nature for learners age 50 or older. It is sanctioned by NMSU and operated under the auspices of Community Education at DACC. Workforce Development Center 2345 E. Nevada St., 527-7776 (map on page ? ? ? ) Community and Workforce Development programs offer a variety of lifelong-learning opportunities that are customer driven and serve as the bridge between our diverse community and the college. We are business-solution partners for Doña Ana County. DACC‘s Customized Training and Workforce Development, Small Business Development Center, and Truck Driving Academy currently occupy the Workforce Development Center, designed to provide services ranging from addressing the start-up needs of a small business to the larger training needs of the established growing business. We are a one-stop source. The center focuses on the needs of the Doña Ana County workforce and business community, providing a training space for its service area. Classes, seminars, conferences and workshops offered in a variety of formats throughout the year at various times. We offer many assessment tools, including ACT WorkKeys. Customized Training • Contract Training • Business Training Seminars Telephone: 527-7776 Customized contract training for employee development is available in a variety of business-related topics at the WDC. Customized classes focus on employee development and peak team performance. Every aspect of a course may be tailored to meet an organization’s specific needs, including class topics and content, location, length and time. The courses may be held on campus or at the work location. Times can be tailored to fit employee work schedules. Customized training services have been utilized by numerous local banks and businesses, public schools, government contractors, and federal, state, and local governmental agencies. Training areas have included computer skills, management/supervision, welding, customer service, and others. Business training seminars cover topics in business, computers, and professional development. These seminars are open to the public. Continuing Education Units Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional Educations Units (CPUs) may be awarded for organized, noncredit, continuing education experiences. CEUs and CPUs may not be used to fulfill degree requirements.

As a member of the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network, SBDC’s experienced staff can help you: • Explore business ownership opportunities in Doña Ana County or Sierra County • Start a new business or make an established one more efficient and profitable • Create alternatives for solving problems • Measure your success potential • Improve your management skills • Access a wealth of business resources Specialized Consulting Specialized consulting can help you develop an individualized plan, creating alternatives for solving marketing problems, including record keeping, accounting, and inventory control. Business Education The SBDC offers individualized tutoring in various aspects of management that can help you avoid serious and costly mistakes. If needed, special arrangements can be made for SBDC staff to come to your business site to discuss strategies. Seminars, classes and workshops are available, and are conveniently scheduled during evening and weekend hours. Direct referral services are available to help you find other businesses and services.
