Open Access<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Education is open to everyone, regardless of educational<br />

background. Courses and workshops offered are based on student<br />

interests and needs. Some courses are scheduled every semester,<br />

while others come and go depending on demand.<br />

There are neither grades nor degrees. Continuing Education Units<br />

(CEUs) may be earned in skill-building and professional-development<br />

type courses. Certificates of participation are available for all<br />

classes.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Education is supported entirely by tuition fees; hence<br />

minimum enrollments are required in most classes. Classes vary in<br />

length from a few hours to eight or more weeks.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Education courses cover a wide range of subjects,<br />

broadly categorized as follows:<br />

Courses for children may be found among Kids <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

in the <strong>Community</strong> Education offerings. Kids <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> is<br />

held during the summer. Classes and activities are planned to reflect<br />

the regular programs offered by the various departments at the community<br />

college. Student service clubs are involved in some of the<br />

programming.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Locations<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Education classes are housed throughout the community.<br />

Locations include the community college, the main campus<br />

of NMSU, the public schools, <strong>University</strong> Terrace Good Samaritan<br />

Village, Mesilla Valley Mall, Branigan Cultural Center, Branigan Library,<br />

My Bookstore, and DACC’s Workforce Development Center.<br />

Classes may also be held in other county locations, depending on<br />

residents’ interests.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Involvement Welcome<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Education welcomes suggestions and input. Potential<br />

students are encouraged to call or visit with inquiries, course ideas,<br />

and requests. Those with a specialty may consider becoming <strong>Community</strong><br />

Education instructors and sharing their expertise with others.<br />

Continuing Education Units<br />

Continuing education units may be awarded for organized, noncredit,<br />

continuing education experiences. Continuing education<br />

units may not be used to fulfill degree requirements.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Service Programs<br />

One community service project currently is being operated under<br />

the auspices of <strong>Community</strong> Education. It is the Mimbres Valley<br />

Learning Center, located at 2300 E. Pine St. in Deming.<br />

The MVLC offers an array of certificate, credit, noncredit, vocational,<br />

and recreational classes for everyone in Luna County, along with<br />

a customized training program for local businesses. Another integral<br />

part of the center is the DACC Truck Driving Academy.<br />

Academy for Learning in Retirement<br />

The Academy for Learning in Retirement is a program of educational<br />

opportunities of a scholarly nature for learners age 50 or older. It is<br />

sanctioned by NMSU and operated under the auspices of <strong>Community</strong><br />

Education at DACC.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> and Workforce Development programs offer a variety of<br />

lifelong-learning opportunities that are customer driven and serve as<br />

the bridge between our diverse community and the college. We are<br />

business-solution partners for Doña <strong>Ana</strong> County.<br />

DACC‘s Customized Training and Workforce Development, Small<br />

Business Development Center, and Truck Driving Academy currently<br />

occupy the Workforce Development Center, designed to provide<br />

services ranging from addressing the start-up needs of a small business<br />

to the larger training needs of the established growing business.<br />

We are a one-stop source.<br />

The center focuses on the needs of the Doña <strong>Ana</strong> County workforce<br />

and business community, providing a training space for its service<br />

area. Classes, seminars, conferences and workshops offered in a variety<br />

of formats throughout the year at various times. We offer many<br />

assessment tools, including ACT WorkKeys.<br />

Customized contract training for employee development is available<br />

in a variety of business-related topics at the WDC. Customized<br />

classes focus on employee development and peak team performance.<br />

Every aspect of a course may be tailored to meet an organization’s<br />

specific needs, including class topics and content, location,<br />

length and time. The courses may be held on campus or at the work<br />

location. Times can be tailored to fit employee work schedules.<br />

Customized training services have been utilized by numerous local<br />

banks and businesses, public schools, government contractors,<br />

and federal, state, and local governmental agencies. Training areas<br />

have included computer skills, management/supervision, welding,<br />

customer service, and others.<br />

Business training seminars cover topics in business, computers, and<br />

professional development. These seminars are open to the public.<br />

Continuing Education Units<br />

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional<br />

Educations Units (CPUs) may be awarded for organized, noncredit,<br />

continuing education experiences. CEUs and CPUs may not be used<br />

to fulfill degree requirements.
