shade at a well. We had been overtaken in <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> morning by a couple <strong>of</strong> men mounted<br />

on a dromedary, who had been sent after us by<br />

Meshur to show us <strong>the</strong> way. <strong>The</strong>y were Eoala who<br />

had gone to <strong>the</strong> Sebaa in <strong>the</strong> suite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Sheykh's<br />

wife, when she had chosen to return to her fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Jedaan ; and it shows how liberal <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bedouin</strong>s are,<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir toleration <strong>of</strong> individuals while<br />

at war, that<br />

<strong>the</strong>se men had been living for some weeks in Jedaan's<br />

to get when <strong>the</strong>y are ill. <strong>The</strong>y somehow manage<br />

to sleep in this position without falling <strong>of</strong>f<br />

At <strong>the</strong> well we were overtaken also by a small<br />

party <strong>of</strong> Welled Ali, driving a hundred or so <strong>of</strong><br />

sheep and lambs l)efore <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> Easter sales<br />

at Damascus. I cannot think many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m will<br />

arrive <strong>the</strong>re alive, for <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r is prodigiously
