and among <strong>the</strong>m a party <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Amur roLbers,<br />

whom ]\Iobammed chaffed considerably about <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession, asking <strong>the</strong>m why <strong>the</strong>y had not paid us<br />

a visit kist night and saying that <strong>the</strong> Beg had been<br />

waiting to receive <strong>the</strong>m, and woukl have made <strong>the</strong>m<br />

a present <strong>of</strong> all his spare bullets. <strong>The</strong> men laughed<br />

Tudmur, Arak, and Sokhne send <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

camels and<br />

sheep to graze with <strong>the</strong> more respectable <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m in<br />

<strong>the</strong> spring, and eat and drink with <strong>the</strong>m when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

meet. <strong>The</strong>y are, all <strong>the</strong> same, a very low tribe<br />

indeed, and neglect even <strong>the</strong> virtue <strong>of</strong> hospitality to<br />

strangers. If you dismount at <strong>the</strong>ir tents, Mohammed<br />

says, <strong>the</strong>y strip and rob you.<br />

Wilfrid was anxious to visit a camp <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
