many lambs are already dead, and <strong>the</strong>y have given<br />

us one which, as we are short <strong>of</strong> provisions, we are<br />

glad enough to take.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> shepherds see that<br />

a lamb can go no far<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y cut its throat, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> meat is lawful eating, though it would<br />

not be so if <strong>the</strong> animal had died <strong>of</strong> its own<br />

accord.<br />

We should hardly have found <strong>the</strong> well if it had<br />

not been for <strong>the</strong> Eoala, as it lay in a very unlikely<br />

place and, not having been used this<br />

year, had no<br />

tracks leading to it. It is very deep, sixty feet, as<br />

we measured by <strong>the</strong> rope used; but <strong>the</strong> water is<br />

sweet and good. Its name is Busep-i. All <strong>the</strong><br />

beasts, camels as well as mares, drank copiously,<br />

my mare, <strong>the</strong> most abstemious, not being content<br />

with less than four buckets full. <strong>The</strong> Welled Ali<br />

shepherds have insisted<br />

on keeping company with<br />

under our protection ; but <strong>the</strong>ir attempt to go<br />

through at all is to me inexplicable. <strong>The</strong>y have<br />

with <strong>the</strong>m, besides <strong>the</strong> sheep, fifteen camels and a<br />

nice looking mare and foal, all lawful prize <strong>of</strong><br />

war !<br />

April 13.—No abatement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heat. <strong>The</strong><br />

sheep go with <strong>the</strong>ir tongues hanging out, poor<br />

things, and <strong>the</strong>ir owners have shorn some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

in <strong>the</strong> hopes <strong>of</strong> saving <strong>the</strong>m. Soon after Ave started,<br />

we passed between two high hills, Keukle lo <strong>the</strong><br />

right and Rummakh to <strong>the</strong> left. <strong>The</strong> Koiila told
