account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Stables at Riad and<br />

<strong>the</strong> tale <strong>of</strong> a distinct Nejdean breed existing <strong>the</strong>re, a<br />

talc which so far as I could learn no <strong>Bedouin</strong> north<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jebel Shammar believes a word <strong>of</strong>.<br />

Mr. Palo-rave<br />

must have been deceived on this point by tlie townsmen<br />

<strong>of</strong> Riad, for <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Bedouin</strong>s know Ibn<br />

Saoud perfectly by name and know <strong>of</strong> his mares.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>y all assert that <strong>the</strong> Riad stud is quite a<br />

modern collection, got toge<strong>the</strong>r by Feysul and acquired<br />

principally from <strong>the</strong>mselves. Abdallahil)n-Feysul-ibn-Saoud<br />

still sends to <strong>the</strong> Anazeh<br />

for additions to it from time to time ; and I know<br />

<strong>of</strong> one instance in which he sent four mares from<br />

Riad as far as Aleppo to a celebrated horse standing<br />

<strong>the</strong>re.<br />

General Daumas's book on <strong>the</strong> horses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Sahara does not do more than touch on those <strong>of</strong><br />

Araljia ;<br />

and, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> an Italian work<br />

which I have heard <strong>of</strong>, but which is out <strong>of</strong> print, I<br />

know <strong>of</strong> nothing on <strong>the</strong> subject better than Captain<br />

Upton's pamphlet called " Newmarket and Arabia.''<br />

This, with some really interesting facts and generally<br />

correct notions, is<br />

but a sketch taken from information<br />

gained at second hand. <strong>The</strong> pamphlet, as far<br />

iis<br />

it relates to Arabia, consists mainly <strong>of</strong> a discussion<br />

as to Avhat sort <strong>of</strong> horse it was Noah took with him
