from Jeddan as to terms, and we are authorised<br />

now to propose an arrangement on <strong>the</strong> following<br />

basis<br />

1. Peace shall be made.<br />

2. All claims for losses by ei<strong>the</strong>r side shall be<br />

considered settled.<br />

3. Ibn Shaalan shall withdraw his claim to <strong>the</strong><br />

pastures <strong>of</strong> Homs and Hama.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> Sebaa will receive <strong>the</strong> Eoiila as guests in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Upper Desert, where <strong>the</strong>re is room for all.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se very fair terms we have proposed this afternoon<br />

to Sotamm and <strong>the</strong> Akid, supporting tliem<br />

with all <strong>the</strong> aro;uments we could command. I told<br />

Sotamm that a man in a great position, such as his,<br />

should give an example <strong>of</strong> wisdom to his people, and<br />

not be led away by <strong>the</strong> mere lust <strong>of</strong> glory, which<br />

makes fools <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> common sort <strong>of</strong> men ; that he<br />

must know that an aimless war like this, between<br />

two Anazeh tribes, was ruinous to both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

that <strong>the</strong> camels he seized to-day would be taken<br />

from him to-morrow, for <strong>the</strong> fortune <strong>of</strong> war was<br />

always turning ; that <strong>the</strong> only people who really<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ited by such fighting were <strong>the</strong> Turks, <strong>the</strong><br />

enemies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m all, and that he should know better<br />

than to play into <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> Pashas and Mutesherifs.<br />

Sotamm assented to all tliis, admitted that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turkish Government were primarily to blame in<br />
