ENDNOTES
1 This title was inspired by the title of an article I read as part of my research. See D. Kaplan and
E. Ben-Ari, ‘Brothers and Others in Arms: Managing Gay Identity in Combat Units of the Israeli
Army’, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Vol. 29, No. 4, August 2000, pp. 396–432.
2 I use the term ‘gay soldiers’ to refer to male and female officers and other ranks with same-sex
attraction.
