improve their futures<br />

CHILDREN <strong>from</strong> St Thomas<br />

Church of England Primary<br />

School in Lydiate were praised<br />

<strong>for</strong> their win in this year’s<br />

annual swimming gala.<br />

The event which took place on<br />

Friday, April 26 was<br />

represented by nine schools<br />

<strong>from</strong> Maghull and Crosby who<br />

were all competing to gain<br />

victory in both individual and<br />

team relay events.<br />

It was a closely fought<br />

competition throughout the<br />

morning but St Thomas Church<br />

of England school’s swimming<br />

team comprising of year 4, 5<br />

and 6 children continued their<br />

fantastic year of sport by<br />

winning gold <strong>for</strong> the school.<br />

This is the second time this<br />

year the school have come in<br />

first place in the pool, earlier in<br />

the year the team won the year<br />

5 swimming event. However<br />

this is the first time the school<br />

have ever won the overall<br />

school competition in its<br />

history.<br />

Assistant head teacher Mark<br />

Ward said: “This was a thrilling<br />

morning <strong>for</strong> all the schools<br />

involved and the children swam<br />

their hearts out in the races.<br />

The school are very proud of<br />

their achievement.”<br />

UNEMPLOYED Sefton residents have<br />

recently taken steps to improve their<br />

futures by attending a training<br />

programme to become qualified<br />

sports coaches.<br />

Active Sefton and Sefton@Work<br />

organised the 12 week programme<br />

which was accessed by 19 men and<br />

women <strong>from</strong> across Sefton aged<br />

18–48.<br />

A variety of coaching sessions<br />

including football and sailing meant<br />

participants were able to gain<br />

qualifications in a number of activities<br />

<strong>from</strong> first aid, to health and safety.<br />

The programme was funded by<br />

Sefton Council and the European<br />

Social Fund which was set up to<br />

improve employment opportunities in<br />

the European Union and so help raise<br />

standards of living.<br />

It aims to help people fulfil their<br />

potential by giving them better skills<br />

and better job prospects.<br />

confidence level I now see; they are<br />

working with each other, making<br />

comments and suggestions and are<br />

really rising to the occasion!”<br />

After successfully achieving their<br />

qualifications on the programme,<br />

participants attended a graduation<br />

ceremony on Friday, April 19, where<br />

they were presented with their<br />

qualifications.<br />

Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation<br />

also supported the programme and<br />

donated a signed shirt won on the day<br />

by one of the participants.<br />

Active Sefton are looking at future<br />

Sefton@work to assist unemployed<br />

residents achieve qualifications in a<br />
